Anonymous and the Fed

I don't agree with everything anonymous does, but I have to say I'm watching this with much anticipation. And a fair amount of pleasure.

http://www.zdnet.com/anonymous-posts...ls-7000010740/

Anyone disagree with what anonymous is doing? I guess I see it as a mechanism to counter the massive amounts of lobbying done by business interests against the interests of citizens, any other takes?

Think it'll lead to any re-examination of copywrite law? I hope?

I think that strongly depends on the field.

Anyway, if it were up to most of the people writing the articles you wouldn't. They don't see a dime of it anyway.

Example:
http://www.nature.com/news/mathemati...ishing-1.12243

And of course there's www.arxiv.org, but that's not peer-reviewed.

Simply put: I'm really interested in how this will play out. Also, the Operation Last Resort video is very entertaining.

Ah. Well this whole thing got started with Swartz being heavily prosecuted for batch downloading academic papers through MIT's journal access with plans to publish them for free. Never got around to it though.

Some guy did something like this to JSTOR. It might be related, I don't know. I'm envious of the ostrich.

I didn't know that. It seems that the whole movement is often painted as kids wanting to torrent free video games. I had never thought of this in an academic sense. You just gave me a new found respect for them.

You've never run into issues with researching topics? I've had a few emails that stemmed from me mass saving from Journals as they thought I may be a bot or someone nefarious. I think it's a good thing, keeping the government on its toes and exposing the easy to which information can be accessed is good for public awareness. Makes you wonder what China has.

Apart from EA, most video game devs have done a pretty good job figuring out how people want access to content (via the internet for reasonable prices). Most gamers get wood whenever you mention the name "GabeN". The real issue as far as torrenting goes is movie and music distributors, they've been fighting tooth and nail to not give up their cash cow. Seems even most artists hate the MPAA and RIAA.

But Anonymous seems to have largely moved beyond that into more FoI/anti-lobbying/anti-corruption territory. Which I generally enjoy watching them do. I was laughing pretty hard when they hacked a .gov site and replaced it with "Asteroids", which subsequently went down due to what's effectively a DDoS from the site's popularity.

My comment was more in specific to Swartz, but ya I had never really thought much of it. I guess I am a bit unaware as to where general hactivists end and anonymous begins.

Start using some of the typical journals and you'll be floored by the prices for articles.

O.k., clicked links. Anon is the largest group of worthless douches the internet has ever seen. Stealing bank employee information to spur law reform? These guys might know a bit about digital terrorism, but they are idiots as a whole.

Philosophy and RELS is never that bad, but most of the stuff I would read is free because its copyright has expired. I stay away from modern philosophy as much as I can to be honest.

Also, god you guys can be a bunch of stick-in-the-muds.

On the point you made saying they are doing this "to counter the massive amounts of lobbying done by business interests against the interests of citizens", what makes you think our interests are truly being represented here? Sure, the DOJ is out of hands with its persecution of citizens both foreign (Kim DotCom) and domestic (Swartz), but this attack comes off more as grandstanding while using the well-being of unrelated individuals without remorse. I feel they had a much bigger target and were unable to achieve it (actually disrupting the DOJ and not some financial institutions). Don't get me wrong, I'd LOVE to see Eric Holder and his gang of DOJ crooks receiving punishment for their crimes, but if you're not going to go after them, don't bother.

Oh but wait....no one was complaining when Westboro Baptist Church was the target for wanting to picket at the funerals at Sandy Brook Elementary.
