*Official* Building/Upgrading/Custom Water cooling Advice Thread

I have noticed a lot of people lately with question about building/upgrading a computer. (Including me) I just though it would be a good idea to make an organized thread so the board wont be cluttered.

For building just post your price range, and what you want to to with the computer

For upgrading just post your current system specs, your price range, and what you wan tot upgrade.

I hope this helps everybody out,
Nick

32-bit OSs can address 4gb total memory. Your RAM is the last to be allocated, so if you have a 512mb graphics card and another 256mb worth of various controllers (yes, your computer needs memory for that), you'll end up with about 3.2gb RAM max, no matter how much RAM is physically installed on the mobo. If you have more VRAM, you'll get less usable RAM.

I just threw a new hdd in an old 05 dell PC. installed windows xp sp2 successfully but im having trouble connecting to the internet. Any advice on where to look for trouble shooting. The internal recommendations for trouble shooting aren't working.

I know everything is good on the ethernet cable end because im using it now on a different computer. The dell wont see the ethernet cable when it is plugged in.

Is this possibly due to a lack of drivers?

Also it didn't ask for the code that was on the back of the windows sp2 CD.

Is there anywhere I can find the necessary drivers and upload them manual with a cd or flash drive? I don't even really need internet access although it would be nice. Im using this computer for automotive tuning and diagnostics.

Since it is a Dell it should be easy. Go to dell and go to the support section. Click the drivers then look for the service tag on your computer. Enter it and it should show the drivers. If there is no tag then you can use the model # to find the drivers.

Download and put them on a cd or USB. Transfer them over and install.

If the XP cd you used was the reinstall disc that came with the computer then that is why it didn't ask for the key. It is a OEM disc and will handle that all by itself.

So old it's not worth it. Only things I'm reusing are monitor, mouse, and keyboard.

*EDIT* Tinkered with this site yesterday and today, don't know how reliable it is though.

No prob, the case is ugly as sin tho, and the mobo I didn't really look into too much. You could also go for a Intel Core i3-4130 instead of the i5 and try to fit in a 760 into the budget but thats all I can say with my limited expertise in the current gen.

Does anyone know if there are any other monitors other than the VG248QE, that does or is going to support g-sync. I'm going to pick up a new monitor but have no use for 3D but would love to have a g-sync ready monitor.
