1. Buy a high quality mask, dual lens is always a plus.
2. Research the reviews. I would look at Tippmanns first, because they are cheap and sturdy.

Get a nice mask that won't fog on you. Don't be afraid to buy used items either, if you do your homework and shop around, you can find used products like new for a fraction of the new price. My masks are both used, my sandana is used, my 68ci/4500 is used, both my pairs of pants are used, my back-up marker is used; even if you buy something new, after a few weekends in the woods it'll look like it was used anyway. Save the cash.

Check the B/S/T section on here.
I'd get a V-force Profiler or a Dye I4 mask.
For a gun, the Tippmann FT-12 is solid. I like an Empire Axe as you can keep up with electrics and you can get a used one for around $300
For a hopper, get something that's force fed and not gravity fed. A rotor V3 is popular but a v-max is cheaper and has soft fingers.
Air tank, get a 45/4500 or larger for scenario games.

Each marker has a different frame size. It's personal preference. The mini is the smallest frame that I know of.

Definitely make sure you get a mask with thermal lens. Personally, I love the flexs. But you can always go try on some different masks at your shop and see which one you like the best. As for your marker, Tippmanns are great. My dad is a woodsballer and he has a x7 Phenom, a5 for a backup, and a sl-68 ll for playing with renters (he isn't confident enough to play against speedballers with a pump yet ). I also started off with a 98c and now my little brother is starting off with one. If you get the a5 or x7, they have the cyclone hopper which is great. If not, I'd get an electric hopper. As long as you aren't trying to shoot 15-20 bps (I hope not), an old Revy (one with the eyes) works great. And for your tank, definitely get a compressed air tank. A lot of people get a 48/3000, but they are heavy and don't hold a lot of air. If you're playing woodsball, a 68/4500 is a good size (that's what I use when I play woodsball). Also, if you plan on shooting a lot of paint, don't forget to get a pod pack and some pods.

You should get whatever you want its your money (or your parents) and will be your marker. If you want milsim get one if you want something else get that..
Be sure to read reviews and do research before making a final choice and shoot the markers too.

When you ask questions like that on here, don't take everyone's replies for truth. A large portion of the population here is speedballers, who see milsim guns (the guns that look like actual weapons) as useless and a waste of cash, and so most people here will advise against them.
My opinion is get whatever you want, just realize that when you buy a paintball marker, you are paying for every piece of it. Thus a $200 gun that is covered in superfluous rail systems and plastic to make it look tactical is really a $175gun + $25 in unproductive plastic all over it.
That being said, I run an Etha with the EMC kit on top of it to make it look like a milsim marker. Does it add anything to my game? No, not all at. I just like the way it looks. Plus, the extra pound or so of plastic is not the big deal most people say it is; never have I thought "I could have gotten that guy out if my gun was lighter".

Personally, I wouldn't. Most of that stuff doesn't do anything but make it look cooler and weight more.

If you have $600 then I say for sure don't spend it all on a marker. The gear you use is just as important. As a lot of people said, get a mask. I have vforce grills which I love but there are other good masks too. Also unless you get a tippmann A5 or X7, you'll probably want a loader. Not a rotor but maybe a halo too. I also recommend a pair of paints and a nice HPA tank. As far as the markers go, it's all opinion. The tippmann x7 is a great woods all marker but can be a little heavier and louder. Very reliable though. I have a BT tm7 which is has internals of the mini and I love it. However, I also have an A5 which can be a money pit you can't help but want to put mods on it. Also, if you get a Tippmann 98, most likely you'll want to upgrade again soon. Not always but I did.
In summary. I personally think the gear is as important as the marker to have fun. If you have $600, maybe split it and spend $300 on gear and $300 on a marker. Good way to get a good marker for that price is maybe look at some used marker.
Good luck bud and welcome to the sport
List of what markers too look into:
Tippmann x7 - $300 for new mech
BT tm7. - $400 new and actually haven't heard anything bad from the entire BT line
Invert mini. -$325 new
Tippmann crossover - $425
There are some others but these are just some to look at to start, and they're even cheaper if you looked into a used one.

Mini isnt a bad choice. Check out the empire axe too. Almost the same gun. Just a little stretched to fit bigger hands better. Also comes with a on/off reg. but yeah, you can use a mini for sure. It's a great marker. The fatigues are okay but paintball pants are made so you can slide and they won't fall apart. Also, the paintball outfits help make paint bounce and you in the game longer. But, if your starting out, nobody would blame you for holding off for a bit on that stuff.
I added a small list two or three posts up.

ah, I see. I just assumed it was hunting camo, not real fatigues. That's mostly what I've seen at my local field. I apologize for my assumption.
