Stripped Screw Help

Hi guys. I have a problem that has been driving me crazy for a few days now. I am completely unable to get the front grip frame screw out of my A1. The head is completely stripped out. I did my best to notch the screw to use a standard screw driver (I've used this method in the past with decent results) but because the screw is recessed I wasn't able to make a good enough cut. When I tried to turn the screw the screwdriver sheared off some of the material from the screw head.

Besides taking a dremel with a mill style bit and cutting the screw head off, does anyone have any ideas? I think the screw may be seized in the body but I can't tell.

Maybe I could send it in to someone like Jay or Bob and they could take it out?

I used a star headed bit to get the stripped reg to body hex head out of my "mint " black a1 that trilogy252 sent me....It worked, I lined it up, and tapped it in. Backed the screw out pretty easily.

Thanks I'll see if I can find one at my local hardware store.

A follow up to this is, if I can get the screw out, what type of threads are on the screw so I can replace it?

Not sure if you'd be able to get one in there because of the angle, but an easy-out style screw extractor may work. The star/torx bit trick is also a good suggestion. If you have a right angle driver, that can make it easier to get in there. Failing that, you can also try epoxying a throwaway hex key into the head of the screw, let it dry for 24 hours, and try to twist it out.

The screw is M5 threaded.

Thanks Doc. I was hoping you'd post in here.

Yeah, I was thinking about the hex key option. Maybe some of sled's 2-ton epoxy would work.

besides it being recessed, the biggest problem I've run into trying to get it out is the angle.

If anyone else has ideas, please feel free to share.

Put it on a 2x4 and step hard- guaranteed something other than that lil bastard screw will be your next project.

That may just be the most helpful advice I have ever received.

if you have not gotten them out, the ones below work really great and always handy to have around.

put your drill on reverse, pick the bit that will fit, start with the pointed end. drill still in reverse flip the bit to the cork screw end and back it out.

can i please speak, oh can i please speak!

ok bro, fast Jordan fix, removed the regulator (so the allen key no scratchy).

take a bigger allen key that sits snug in the stripped screw hole, locktite or super glue it in, let sit over night, turn allen key gingerly, problem fixed.

J.

Well, resorted to drilling the head out of the screw. And was able to get the grip frame off. Screw unthreaded from the body cleanly. So I'm not sure where it was binding. Now just need to get a new screw.
