I have had a deal go sour and PayPal was very helpful with getting me my money back. I have no idea what happened in your case so I can not comment on that. Most of the time if you have saved emails and receipts and you are in the right, they will help you.
When I sell a gun I always make a boxing video that includes the gun being aired up and shooting before its put in the box. When I buy a gun I always make an unboxing video. It is worth the extra 5 mins of your time. The more you put into it the more you can cover your butt when something goes wrong.
I had forgotten about 3rd party services. This may be your best bet until you build up some feedback. It can also be beneficial if you are buying a gun you aren't familiar with. Most people who offer the 3rd party service know just about every gun and what to look for, good and bad. I can't tell you how many times I have herd of someone buying a "geo+" and end up finding out it's just a geo with normal internals. Or people claim they have all the updated v2 or v3 parts on a gun when really they don't.
You can find 3rd party services here
