4x4 tire question

i have a '96 jeep grand cherokee laredo. its basically awd (rwd the front wheels engage when the rears slip or some bs). apparently if you were to replace one of the tires with the wrong size tire, it would damage the drive shaft or differential, something along those lines because the tires wouldnt be spinning at the same rate.

i cracked a rim the other night, was just able to get a new one today. i got a used tire put on because my other 3 tires werent brand new but still have good tread left. the used tire i grabbed today is the same size, 235/75/15, as the remaining 3 tires. being that its a used tire and its kind of hard to accurately say that the tread is the same by eyeballing it, would a difference in tread depth be enough to give me a diff/ drivetrain problem?

any first hand experience or thoughts on this?

I doubt a difference in tire wear would create any issues, but it is true that large differences in overall diameter can damage an awd vehicle.

At worst you're off by a fraction of a fraction of an inch, if you're worried about tread depth. This will not be an issue.

If you were off by an couple of inches, you could have issues.

a friend of mine has the same jeep, put a 235 on (it was his spare, didnt know of this issue and that youre supposed to rotate the spare and keep it the same size) when he had a 225 on the other side and now his front driveshaft is clunking and his speedos bouncing all over.

hopefully this goes smooth.. thanks for the input guys

235 doesn't matter without knowing the sidewall height.

Make sure all 4 are the same size. New vs old tires concerning tread depth isn't that big of a deal like mustang mentioned.

But you should not run a 235 on one side and a 245 on the other. Especially since your jeep is full time 4wd
