My friend bought one, I ended up driving it home for him since he had to drive the car we came in back to the rental company. It's a fun car to drive. Obviously it isn't all that fast, but that isn't a concern for everyone. While it isn't fast in comparison to fast/performance cars, it definitely has some pep to it in comparison to most cars. (definitely kicks the **** out of my mazda6, although that isn't saying anything at all) Regardless of it not being fast, this doesn't take away from the enjoyment I got out of driving it. The driving experience was just so enjoyable in comparison to what i'm used to. I like the interior a lot, reminds me of a 90's car in styling, but has some nice options. The backseat is fairly useless for actually seating people though. My opinion is also completely biased because i'm an AE86 fanboy.

Compared to a Mazda 6 almost anything will be fun to drive .... Have you tried the new Nissan Juke?

Yeah, and if he wants 20mpg (which, flogging it everywhere to have fun will produce) he might as well get the better car, for better coin.
Has no one in this thread ever driven an rx-8? its miles better than the BRZ, cheaper, and has a cooler engine.
If you want longevity out of the rotary, just premix your gas. By that I mean calculate how much to add during fillups and dump a little oil in the gas.

for low 20's you could get a c5 z06 and have a much better car than an rx8

Exactly, at least the rx-8 gives you doors to squeeze your self and accompanying boner through.

I've driven an RX8. A shinka edition, no less.
Was not impressed, would not want to own. Would be fun as a track car, but meh. Poor gas mileage even driving conservatively, limited number of places that will work on it, not as easy to find cheap parts for, etc..

I drove one. Was unimpressed. I thought it had 230hp but it didn't feel like it.

I also am not impressed with the rx-8. Had potential, didn't live up to it though.

Funny that Corvettes get better highway mileage than most "eco-sedans."

It's only because of the gearing. Once you're in the city, its displacement makes an appearance.

In a nutshell, I just think it's cool that a car like the FR-S/BRZ is getting made. In an age of big, heavy cars loaded with safety and luxury features, tight emissions controls, hybrid this, auto transmission that, you've got Toyota and Subaru getting together and making a lightweight, RWD car, and plenty of them in 6 speed. Personally I think that's pretty cool.
But I'm not running out to get one. I'm looking forward to a few years from now when the TRD/STi or whatever performance versions come out.
25 grand can get you so much if you look used. Up here that can land you nice Euro cars (E46 M3's, B7 S4's) or lots of Japanese stuff (Skylines, Supra's, STi's, EVO's, 350z's, etc.), as well as nice Mustangs, hell even older Corvette's. Basically, cars that have decent power, and aren't just about cornering aggresively like the FR-S/BRZ (but can do that also). I could go on an on...
The FR-S and BRZ will really shine when they age a little and become used cars at lower prices IMO.

because you have to have a car with enough power to be able to use a long 6th gear.

I was under the impression they would not do this because it would kill the STi/WRX

Now go drive a BRZ, you will see my point. If you cross shop the 2, which you should really do, you will find your butt in the rx8.
Im just saying if you want a low power cornering car, there isn't a better suspension/corner car out there for the money. If you can ditch the back seats, then the s2000 should also be considered.
