New Player Here

Hey all, well I use to play paintball a few years back, but never had the money for it, well heck still don't have the money for it lol.

But anyways, I scored a Tippmann 98 Custom from my friend. It has no tank, so I was gonna buy me a 20oz CO2 like I had before.

Well then I read earlier about how it sloshes around in the tank, and can get shot out, into my o-rings and just be very bad on my marker.

Then I started looking into 3000, and 4500psi tanks. Darn they're pricey..

So is it fine if I use a CO2 tank just till I have the money for a nice used 4500psi?

Also I know it isn't the most top-of-the-line marker, but again I'm not the typical rich dude who can just buy whatever

BUT for what I do have, what are some good accessories to add to my marker? I'm gonna buy some extra elbows in case my hopper breaks off. That happened once, and man I was pissed.

But also are drop-forwards good? And I wanna add a double-trigger, what's a good one for under $50? Also barrels.. I thought the Flatline was the best (For just playing in the woods), but would a carbon one or something be better for me? I Just don't want it so tight, and accurate, that it shoots like crap when dirty. Cuz like I said, I'll be playing in my woods.

Thanks to all who help! -Justin

Darn, nice. That sounds great, or a 4500 for about $40-50 (With hydro left) would be nice aswell.

One question about those, man that's alot of pressure, are they dangerous? I'd be scared to drop my gun, and it blow up.

Once I took a 20oz C02 tank to my local AirGas, the idiot overfilled it, and riding home, about 10 mins later, the valve pops, and it's in my passenger seat, so the whole car is filled with smoke, I swerve, come to a stop on side of the rode, and look like Cheech and Chong. No lie! Lol. I just figured if that happened with these, man I'd be dead...

Haha no, Hpa is pretty safe and sturdy. I have once dropped a ninja bottle on my garage floor and all it did was bounce and chip a little, I almost had a heart attack though

LOL gotcha cool!

I just hope my Airgas people are legit now. See on the 20oz, I believe he was suppose to weigh it, and add the difference right?

Well he added a full 20oz of CO2, and then I guess when it started cooling off, it built pressure. Lol man that pissed me off. I was on my way to a friends house to play, and bam! I had ice all over my passenger seat and window lol.

Right. The correct procedure is to fully vent the tank, place it on the scale and zero it, then start adding liquid CO2 and shut the valve off right as you reach the maximum allowed weight. Cramming as much CO2 in as possible will often lead to burst disc ruptures, like happened to you.

I'm not familiar with Airgas, but it's getting harder and harder to find someone with training and experience in filling smaller-sized CO2 tanks.

There are a lot of silly rumors out there about how CO2 can damage gear, but with a gun like a Tippmann 98 it's perfectly fine. Depending on your situation, CO2 might still be the best option for you. If you're playing on your friend's farm or at places that don't have equipment to fill compressed air tanks, you're going to want your gas source to last as long as possible. The inexpensive 48/3000 HPA tanks will yield less than half as many shots as a 20oz CO2 tank. These low-capacity tanks are fine if you play at commercial fields that offer all-day air with your admission. However, in order to get as many shots as a 20oz you'll need a 68/4500 tank, which are great, but not at all cheap.

Considering how fast the money spent on upgrades adds up, and how inexpensive a lot of really great used guns are these days, I'd hold off on buying any upgrades for your Tippmann. It's already a great, rock-solid starter gun as-is, so you'd be better off putting that money towards a new gun, or better yet- more paint to shoot!

What you might consider buying is a nice loader to use on your Tippmann. Other than the Tippmann Cyclone, these are "universal" upgrades, and would prevent chops or skips during rapid fire.

CO2 is much safer than HPA. But overall, HPA is the better option. You can find some cheap hpa tanks on the b/s/t forum here if you just look around.

on a tippman co2 is fine. Don't buy a used tank because you'll need it moreso if you ever upgrade to another marker, and it may be almost outta hydro by then which cost 35 plust shipping the tank, so buy new when you do to max your hydro time.

Even with new tanks you just have to be savvy about how much time is left on the tank before it's due for a hydro and decide whether the discount is worth on it. Ask for pictures of the stamp if necessary.

LOL so don't buy new OR used. HAHA.

Anyways, well a guy on here with good ratings, sold me 2x 48/30 tanks for $50 shipped. Both have 3 and a half years of hydro left. That is perfect for me. And yeah I won't be shooting that much. Just small games with maybe 3-4 other friends in the woods. Prolly not over 200-300 rounds shot per weekend.

But thanks Inflicted, yeah I will prolly hold on upgrades, and get a better marker later on then. Man, just gotta get a job.. It sucks.

Yeah I understand that, but it's different when you're trying to buy a tank, and have bills man..

These will suit me fine, till I can sell them and get me a 68/45 Ninja.

I see you have a solid starter gun setup. What mask and pod pack do you have? Also if you don't want to throw all your money away, and still have a very good gun for starters to even intermediates, pick up a response trigger for your 98. I have never used one but apprently they help a lot. And maybe a new barrel is a good idea, but these are just suggestions. A 48/3000 tank is great for now, and a much better choice than co2 in my opinion.

Thanks dude! Yeah I just picked up a mint 14" J&J Ceramic barrel from a friend! How are those? I read great reviews..

Anyways, yeah still gotta get a cheap mask, and pods, but that will be next Friday sadly.

Then I will need to read up on what's the best paint for the money, hopefully a brand that I can grab at Wal-mart, etc just to get me fixed up for awhile.

The first thing you should purchase is a good mask. Jt Spectra/Proflex/E-flex, Dye i4, Sly Profits, Vforce Profiler, Vforce Grillz, etc - purchasing a quality mask is the best thing you can do. Make sure it is THERMAL & DUAL PANE and not just ANTI FOG COATED.

Invest in a good air system (something like a 68ci 4500psi carbon fiber system) and then you'll never need to buy another air system again. Purchase something that is Pure Energy (PE), Ninja (The BEST), Crossfire (also great) or Guerilla Air (GA - is ok)

Please do steer clear of Walmart paint. That paint is often BANNED at paintball fields since it stains. Goto a local paintball proshop and ask them some questions. Most of the time you can spend between $38 and $50 for a case of 2000 and never go wrong.

The J&J Barrels are great for what you are doing, when you get a bit more into paintball and learn more, you'll learn about bore sizing. thats something you need not concern yourself with now my good man. Just enjoy paintball!
