End the exclusion of women from the United States Selective service program. Change the Selective Service program, in order for women to participate in the program, just as their male counterparts. With all the same requirements prescribed by law. Make this change retroactive to include women who are not too old to be drafted. End this dishonor on women, and allow them to serve their nation without an outdated law. Woman ages 18 through 25 and living in the U.S. would be required just as men ages 18 through 25 to register with Selective Service. This would help dispel the notion that women are of a weaker gender and would enhance gender equality.

I don't see any point in the draft system anymore. It hasn't been used in decades. It would be stupid to spend money training people that wouldn't give a **** because they don't want to be there in the first place. We have the IRR. It would make more sense to call experienced members back. They signed up for it after all.

I haven't jumped into this debate before, because I wasn't sure what I thought. Now, I will.

I am not against allowing women to serve with men (as long as they are capable, same standards, etc), but I am against coercing women into roles meant for men. If women choose to fulfill a masculine role, so be it. But I no more want to see women forced into service, then I do men forced into childbearing or stay-at-home parenting. I believe men are different then women, and homogenization of gender for sake of equality is silly.

But I am open to being proven wrong. I do not hold this opinion strongly.

Species tend to have a physically dominate sex. I don't see the problem with sole recruitment emphasis of demanding jobs on the more capable gender. That's not to say women couldn't be chosen in a draft setting to do behind the scenes duties or even pilot aircraft and boats. I'm sure branches have enough people in waiting so that might not be an issue. I don't remember this being a major issue of WWII.

Once again we're narrowing the scope of discussion. You can debate all you want about whether or not women should be in the military (only a small portion is actually combat oriented), yet it's ignoring the picture one step back: why do we have a draft at all? The system was "dismissed" in 1973, yet it still persists in the selective service registration system.

I feel that one of the most dangerous allowances to government is a conscripted military force readily available to support whatever military decision they make.
