How active is the CFOA now

I've been hearing mixed messages about the state of the CFOA now. Ive heard theres 10-15 teams in all divisions at events, but other people are telling me there has been a lot more.

I stopped playing CFOA in 2009. I just started working at a field in the charlotte nc area and am now already addicted to paintball again.

I know PBC rock hill runs a CFOA 3 man, which I play on running in the spring. What im wondering is how is the turnout for D4/D5 in the CFOA 5 man events now? When I last played I think there was at least 100 teams at each event.

Also if any Charlotte/Matthews/Weddington/Monroe area guys are looking for a place to practice for CFOA message me.. I can provide some guys with some level on sponsorship.

there is nowhere near 100 teams at cfoa's anymore... those days are long gone. too many tournaments around to pick from.

d3 is lucky to get 5 teams now.
d4 usually has 10-20 on the bigger days
d5 is about the same.

What do you know about the turn out for the 3 mans at PBC rock hill?

What other tournys are in the area? How could the CFOA lose so many players?

I know paintball fell off hard. I just assumed that a new generation of players never really came into the sport, but this huge drop in activity seems very strange

I want to play with real competition. What do you think is the best way to go?

You quit when it pretty much started dying.

Near the end of the season D4 is lucky to have 10 teams and D5 this year stayed around 11-14 teams at each event.

dont know about 3man turnouts anywhere else but compass paintball in summerville.
if you check the APPA site, you can check team registrations for past tourneys. get an idea of how many were there.

cfoa hasnt updated the 3man standings since the first 3man of the fall season. dont know if cfoa or appa is responsible. but teams have no idea what the standings are.

Even PSP doesn't draw nearly as many teams as it used to.

I remember last PSP I played in like 05-06 had about 150 teams just in rookie division. Think they will get close to that for every division combined now

You realize every PSP this year has sold out? And cup has 400+ teams signed up.

Regional leagues won't be the same as it used to be because there's so many leagues around now.

Cool, if 150 teams an event is selling out good for them. Recheck those WC teams, looks to be less than 350 by my count. Compare that to WC 07 where it actually was 400 teams. Not to mention unlike now NPPL was a legitimate competitor to the PSP.

Yeah I was a little confused about how PSP was saying they were breaking attendance records, 400+ teams are entered, when I see 365 teams signed up across ALL divisions (and a few less that are actually paid).

I also heard from someone that the last NPPL had about 55 teams show up. Paintball is just dying.

I think it needs to dum down a bit on how much paint is shot. But paintball shouldn't die. The style of playing where people go through 4-5 pods in a game is just ridiculous. It then comes down to who can afford to shoot more paint.

The problem with paintball as a sport is just that it costs so much to get in to.

I mean just your basic gear alone will run you near $2000, then paying for paint every weekend, tournament entry fees, hotel/travel, etc.

It's amazing how expensive it is to play in this sport. It's not like the prizes you win at an amateur level come anywhere close to helping you recoup what you spent on playing in any of the leagues.

And why are people shooting so much paint these days? Our games in the amatuer leagues back in 2006-2009 usually only lasted about 90 seconds and we usually only shot 2 pods at most.

Anyway, what is the most popular league in North carolina these days?

Gear wise, you can come out ALOT cheaper than that. It is not needed to spend $1500 on a gun. I bought a full setup for $380 (Etek3 AM, Spire, 68/45) coming back, & it will be plenty to compete. After misc. gear & stuff. You could have $600 max in everything & be ready to hit the field.

Sad thing is, it's probably still CFOA.

Tourney ball follows recball, and recball numbers seem to be going down every year. Also, CFOA has more competition then it did a few years ago. When CFOA was drawing 100+ teams, they were the only legit league between NY and FL. Now, there's MAPL (for VA and north) pulling 30ish and GFOA (for GA and south) pulling 30ish. Those numbers minus the average percentage of decline and you get the current CFOA.

I still think the CFOA is doing some things right though. The trained refs, included paint, and ignoring the Race 2 format (mostly) are all very helpful, especially for new and/or casual teams.

You ever think that some of the regional leagues (CFOA, GFOA, MIPL, etc) might be better of joining forces and consolidating efforts? Its pretty sad to see such few numbers in regional tournaments compared to just 7-10 years ago.

Well that depends. Some might like it, others would hate having to drive for hours and hours to get to the event.

Between all of the "little" fields falling to the way side when the economy crashed, and everyone and there brother starting up new series is what has happened to the "big" CFOA numbers. 7-10 years ago there were small fields everywhere. Now only the ones that could weather the storm made it through and there aren't as many players to make up the numbers. I could count 6-7 fields that would send 1 or 2 teams per field to a CFOA and they were within 30 minutes of Greenville SC as late as 5 years ago. Now there is one field with 3 or 4 teams.

Now you take what was 30 or 40 fields spread out in N and S. Carolina and Georgia that were sending 1,2 or 3 teams each to an event and make it 15 to 20 fields with 1 team. Then you divide those 15 to 20 fields over 3 tournament series. We have what we have today. You may draw 6-10 teams more at any given event than were there last year, but I don't think you will ever see the guys that would drive from louisiana and virginia anymore because they fields they played at are no longer open for business.

Just purely my opinion.
