ok, so When I am driving at freeway speeds 75-80. Everything is fine. If i let the throttle dip to 65 then try and speed up back to 75 -80, the engines rev's as if the car is out of gear. yet the engine maintains speed at 65 with no pressure on the gas pedal.

it seems suspect. it's a Mazda 3, 4 speed auto. why would it try and down shift to 3rd if I am traveling from 80 down to 65.

Because you are hitting the gas again to accelerate. It downshifts so you can accelerate faster.

rpms go down when you upshift. since the higher gear requires more work to turn, they turn at a much slower rate when using the same amount of gasoline.

think a multi-speed bike..

when you go to the smaller gears it's harder to turn but easier to keep a high speed. the larger gears are easier to accelerate but your speed is limited..
