Sponsoring Speedball Teams
Topic: Team sponsorship
Perception(s):
* That sponsoring a team will drive traffic to the field thus increasing thus increasing sales revenue
* Wins on Sunday make sales on Monday - A Ego gun won on Sunday, so Ego gun sales will go wild on Monday
* That the team getting sponsors plastered all over their jersey has some value for anyone besides the team
* That traditional sponsored teams mentor beginners and treat them with respect and make them want to come play at the field
* That a sponsored team is an asset to the field
Fact(s):
* That sponsored teams drive away other local teams as they do not want to pay to get beat up for the benefit of a sponsored team
* Sponsored upper level teams become referees for lower level teams, but the quality and bias of the referee calls is questionable
* Sponsored teams receive discounts that stores are not eligible for so the sponsored teams undermine retail store sales
* Logos have no value. Teams have no true revenue stream and remain a liability
Please feel free to comment.

We sponsor teams all the time. I want my logo out there as much as possible. All of our teams are brought in and told just what is expected of them if they don't do that I drop them.

The only value I ever saw in teams sponsored by a field is to play events at other fields. This in turn may bring those other teams to your own field at your events. This is assuming you have events, and assuming there are many other fields within reasonable distance AND assuming the owners of the different fields are all on a friendly basis. Even still it's pretty sketchy.
Now if you have a retail product to sell.............it may be a different story.

You could sponsor a college paintball team, and make the sponsorship contingent on the number of student rec players they bring out to play.

Been trying to. I would offer sponsorship to any and all college teams.

I sponsor one team. And they're basically like my little minions out there in the social world. Same as 7paintball said, I have expectations for them and when when they fail to meet those I drop them. So far it's been working out pretty well though. Can't complain. While the majority of speedballers can be ***holes, they're some that are not. You as a business owner must make that judgment call and help grow this sport. Not hinder it. If no teams were sponsored, there'd be no paintball (to a degree).

Alright I will add something worth while to the thread.
A question:
As far as taxes go, how do I write off a team as a sponsorship. If I sold them paint at wholesale, is there a way to not pay taxes on it since it is a sponsorship?

I believe if you give it to them for free, you can write it off as a promotional expense. If you sell it to them at your cost, you will pay no tax on the money you received from them anyway, since you made no money on it.

Can't really say we ever give anything away. The amount of work I would expect a team to do for that would be a large amount.

You should ask an accountant.
That said, general principle....
If you sell your paint at wholesale, your income from the sale will equal your expense from buying the paint, so you'll wash out on no taxes on your income/profits. If you give it away, you'll have the expense of buying the paint but no income, so it'll essentially decrease your profit and taxes on it.
If you live in a state with sales tax, you're likely supposed to pay sales tax on the paint either way, as you're either selling it or "consuming" it in your business if you're giving it away gratis.

Yeah, Chris said it better. That's the way it works here in Canada as well.

One thing to keep in mind is you do have to use the paint for a business purpose, so if you ever got audited you'd want some accounting that said you gave the paint away as sponsorship and weren't just using it to go play for fun - same principle as you can't just have your business buy a sofa and then toss it in your living room.

I'd say that if sponsoring teams is one of your primary or secondary marketing efforts, you're doing it wrong. Sponsoring a team is almost a charitable effort.
But yes, as mentioned, make huge efforts to make sure they don't think they 'own' your field or let them overrun it.
Is having them around making you more money or putting off people from giving you money? Most I've seen, it's the latter

You aren't dealing with the right people/players then. I will honestly lose to recballers, let them have a good/fair gun battle with me. The rest of my team is pretty good at this too because we all used to get pelted week in and week out.
Look at the quality of the members of the team and make sure they want the sport to grow as a whole.
