Here is step by step on how i splash dyed my spire.
i first started off by completely disassembling my spire.i got a sheet of adhesive vinyl which is very similar to what the virtue sticker is that came with the spire. i then cut the design i wanted into the vinyl so it looked like this.
i then started peeling and applying the vinyl onto my spire. you have to make sure it is down all the way or some of the dye will get underneath and it won't come out exactly like you want. the bottom was more difficult because of all the curves that it has.
next you have to find the color dye you want it is best if you use the liquid rit dye as opposed to the powder because it will dye much quicker. i chose purple and you can find more colors at http://www.ritdye.com/store/
. you can buy this at walmart or your local craft store. be very careful with the dye as it will stain if you get it on your clothes or you hands.
i then added 8 tablespoons to 16 cups of water. how much dye to water ratio you use will affect how light or dark the color is. also how long you leave it in will affect how dark the color is.
after adding the dye to the water i brought it to a boil. i first tested the tray to make sure the color was going to come out in the shade i wanted. i found out to get the shade i wanted i left it in the boiling water for 1 min. then you remove it from the pot and rinse it off with warm water and dry it off with paper towels.
i then peeled off the vinyl and finished drying anything that was still wet. as you can see from this next pic some of the edges were not down all the way so it ran a little. it will also happen if you layer pices of vinyl on top of each other.
after you finish you will need to clean the pot you used with something that has a bleaching agent like soft scrub. i do not recommend you do this in a pot that has teflon.
and here is the finished product I must say I like it a lot.
