Anyone interested to see my mac mini build?

My computers are both dying and I needed something new so I decided to do something a little different this time. I dont really have time to play computer games anymore and with my upcoming possibility of going to grad school for my PhD its not getting much better. So ive decided that for my next computer im going to mess with this mac mini.

The other day i bought the i7 mini and im going to add some internals. I also ordered 16gb of ram and a 256gb crucial m4 ssd for the mini. Im going to add the SSD where the current 1TB is and move the 1TB to the top for storage. I also had to order a little kit that has the logic board remover and the torx i need since i dont have them.

Most of these parts are coming next week to start swapping, but would anyone be interested some pictures of getting through the inside of this thing? Other people have already asked so i was going to take them anyways.

That would be cool. I'm thinking about purchasing a Mac Mini with a nice monitor and ditching my laptop entirely since I use my iPad for most of my on-the-go needs. Did you pay full price for the i7 Mini, or did you get it at a discount?

What i was thinking was, im getting the connectors so that i can attach it to VGA and DVI monitors then take the mini to school with me.

Im pretty much doing the same thing. Ive found over the years that the laptop wasnt really very helpful anyways and i never really used it in favor of my more powerful desktop. I use the ipad to **** around with it when im at home or school too.

I paid $750 for the $799 mini

OMG BRO UR SO COOL LOOK AT ALL THESE PPL WHO CARE!

This thread is obviously about peaking interest in a Mac Mini build, not about saving money. Thanks for your input though.

really? I would love to see the case and motherboard you plan on using.

Im really dont care so much about the price. Im well aware that apple products are overpriced for their functionality. Having built hundreds of PC's over the years im also very aware of not only how to build a computer but the cost of the components involved.

Being that im in a particularly unique niche, something i have never heard anyone else ever say they wanted something like this for this purpose. I would say that its unlikely you will find a product that will do what im looking for, for a large difference in money.

I know it was overpriced but im in a weird spot. I dont really need a laptop but i need a desktop with some power for stupid stuff im doing in school. Not just that but the convenience of taking everything with me and the portability of a laptop just seems impossible to pass up.

Im all ears for the option where i could have gotten something cheaper that would have filled the same roll as this without needing a battery that will eventually go bad and be too large to fit into my backpack easily.

Also note that im accepting a lab position where ill have all the PC components ill need to make this work for graduate school.

If you really wanted to build your own, I suppose mini-itx would be the way to go. I figured you wanted to use OSX and not have to deal with finding parts that will work for a Hackintosh.

even overlooking all of that. I havent found a single ITX case that is similar in form factor to the mini that would allow for me to do the same thing.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129185

what i would use. yes its not all aluminium. but its a nice case. the bottom is just a stupid vertical stand (like a wii system) just sit it down flat like the mac mini or cool thing is that it comes with a versa mount so you can mount it behind a tv or monitor.

here are the other parts
ram
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145339
motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128567
cpu

HDD
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136927

yes the cpu is not a quad core. can get a quad core for 100 more
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116782

397 for the dual core set up or $502 for quad core kit

http://www.tonymacx86.com/home.php all you'r needs to getting mac working perfect on this motherboard

what kind of power uses are you plan on doing with it? video/picture editing and encoding??

So, assuming he got your setup with the quad core, he would still have to spend another $120 on OSX, take all the time to get it working right (assuming it would ever even work 100%). And even after all that, he would still have an i5 rather than i7, with a larger form factor (albeit not by much)...

Just because something might be best for you, doesn't mean it's best for everyone. He wanted a Mac Mini, so he bought one. Why do you even care?

Osx is 20 bucks? Off Mac app store

Why is everyone taking my post as he's dumb he should do this?

I'm just saying he's can save some $ and have the same thing . if $ is not an issue or just really likes form factor and warantee or whatever that's fine . just thought saving a few hundred bucks would be nice and not loseing out.

It's not "the same thing".

And I thought that OSX for $20 was only an upgrade from Lion to Mountain Lion, but a retail disk is still $120 or something
