Cleats from other sports work well, and are often cheaper.
I use adidas trail runners, specific model name escapes me at the moment. Ironically, they cost as much as Shredders and Exalts, but more readily available locally, so i was able to try them on and buy right there, and they are DAMN comfy.
EDIT: Adidas Vigor Trail 2.0. $75 msrp, but various stores sell em for $55.

Stay away from paintball specific cleats, huge waste of money. They are nothing but glorified golf shoes. Go with either football or soccer cleats for the best results. The only time paintball specific cleats are decent is if you are playing on turf all the time.
I'm about to by my first pair of paintball specific cleats. Which ones are better HK Shredders or Exalts?
I tried Exalts and you can feel the tips of the screws digging into the soles of your feet even though i put the thickest foot pads i could find into the shoes. The spikes also come off. My son refs at an indoor paintball field and they find lots of those cleats on the turf. I bought Lacrosse cleats and they are great. I paid 85.00 for them but the really grip the back of my heel so the shoes wil not slip off.
