lets talk lenses

Its that time of year again when I'm ready to blow some money on new camera gear. Last year it was a back up dslr, this year, its time for some new lenses.

Now this isnt a "what should i buy???" thread. just wanna talk lenses, see what you guys use, like, and dont like.

I only shoot nikon (sorry cannon guys). And most of my lenses were current 6-7 years ago when i was still avidly shooting a n70 and n90 lol

So, what do you guys shoot?

i've never kept any of my primes. I shoot a lot of action photography and i just find that I'd rather use zoom lenses than have to switch lenses out every couple minutes to get my shots

I really like the canon 24-105, being that I shoot video. The IS works perfect for hand held shots. 105 is enough telephoto for my needs to shoot action sports like skateboarding or BMX. 24 is decently wide. The zoom and focus rings turn the same way when I zoom out and pull focus closer, so it's far more intuitive than third party lenses. The lens isn't all that sharp, in turn, it's pretty cheap, so I can break one and replace it with out having to sell my car. Sharpness in a lens means very little while shooting video. I often stop it down for more depth of field so it being a slow lens doesn't bother me all too much.

This is one of the best all around lenses for me in my opinion, I use it more than any other lens. If you have similar needs from a lens (not sure you do, your probably not looking to do a ton of video) then finding a Nikon equivalent is definitely recommended.

Edit: I'll add that most floating aperture lenses work fine for my purposes if I'm not zooming. But because I do a lot of zooming in and out while composing my shot, the aperture will "click" and the video will show flickering. Even when stopped down to the maximum at the telephoto end. This is another reason the 24-105 is such a great lens.

Probably because you're not using the right primes.

My 300 F/2.8 was my work horse for about 80% of my sports pictures.

Don't get too excited, all the Canon stuff except my 35L and 580EX is sold. Just made the conversion to Nikon last month.

I'm mostly a prime lens shooter, though I keep zoom on the ultrawide and mid-telephoto for versatility. That being said, I find the Nikon primes I own feel a lot cheaper then the Canon L and Sigma EX glass I was used to. They just don't feel like they could take the same kind of abuse. The IQ is good though, and that's what counts.

On the other hand, my 80-200 is decent for a zoom, and feels like I could beat someone to death with it.

i've only had like 3, and i got rid of em a while ago. they were all too shallow, so youre right.

my go to most recently has been my 70-300 f4-5.6. I keep end up shooting in terrible conditions and dont wanna use my more expensive lenses, and it gets the job done

Everything you ever wanted to know about my switch so far:

You'll be sorry you asked.

*edit* That's a fairly new/unpopulated website, so it's a little sparse and not quite put together yet.

That's because the 1.8G primes are made in China and/or Thailand and are pieces of garbage that just so happen to have good IQ. The two I've had were quick to start squeaking as well.

I had the 85 1.8g, lovely optics, **** build, and out of the box it was dustier inside than my beat to **** 70-200. I could probably use my 1.4D as a hammer and keep chugging along.

I hate to sound like a gear snob, because I'm not, but the 1.8G lenses are throw away lenses IMO. 15 years from now they'll be part of a Coke bottle. It's a damn shame because they really do have awesome optics.

These will get me by for now. Got my eye on an 85 1.4G, but it will be a couple of months before that happens, then I kinda want to follow it up with a 24 1.4.

so if you had to pick between the 1d and 5d now (if you hadnt switched to nikon) what would it be? i know you said you made the 5D your primary camera, but i didnt see a single convincing comment about the 5D being better than the 1D rather than being a full frame camera

Ideally, 1D Mark IV as the price is coming down on those. That would get me the new menu system, better screen, better live view, and all the other feature junk that the 5D has, with the best sensor available on a high speed body short of the 1DX. That's probably what I'd have done had I stuck to Canon.
