George Mason Unniversity: states with the least and most freedom in this country

http://freedominthe50states.org/overall

Least Free States: New York, New Jersey, California, Illinois

Most Free: North & South Dakota, Tennessee, New Hampshire

I wonder if we can draw any conclusions from this. There are numerous categories that are ranked. Travel, drug laws, civil liberties, education, economic, gun control, etc. For example Texas does not rank at the top overall, but it ranks very high for finding a job. California ranks near or at the bottom in almost every category, including Civil Liberties.

Something fun to play with. I wonder if any conclusions can be drawn from the information on the page about the differences between the states.

Interesting that the right to sell raw milk (hooray for salmonella!) was on the list of freedoms weighted, yet abortion rights were nowhere to be found. It's funny that when you start ignoring some specific individual freedoms, states like the Dakotas start taking home "freedom" prizes.

But that doesn't mean there are no consequences.

Woops, I spilled the beans.

Babies have no right to live in many states thanks to abortion, sure.

I don't want to make this thread an abortion debate. The methodology has virtually no mention of rights pertaining to women. The whole equation used by the study, and it's biased weighting component, is obviously skewed towards representing the views of libertarians. No surprise given the funding of the think tank that did the study.

Maybe there was a reason for that.

Some of these restrictions seem awfully counter productive to me.

I'd hardly describe Mercatus—an organization founded by Koch Industries' Executive Vice President Richard Fink and supported by the Koch brothers (who spend millions of dollars on lobbying efforts) and ExxonMobile (who receives billions of dollars in subsidies)—as being representative of libertarian values. They're nothing more than corporatist **********s masquerading as libertarians.

Yes, mercatus and george mason are generally regarded as jokes by most professional economists. (not everyone there is bad though)

I think it's the same for any academic field, not just economics.

You're right. All previous economic policies sprang up from thumb-sucking toddlers and brain damaged fourth graders.

Being regarded as jokes by the public has nothing to do with the origins of economic policy.
