Careful, your racial bias is showing. Baltimore is a heavy majority black city.

That isn't racial bias in this instance.

Do you understand why the NRA is fighting this so hard?

It's because guns sold in private to private transactions account for less than 1% of firearm deaths. There is no reason congress should be going down a road that will solve less than 1% of the problem.

The NRA is fighting for stiffer gun crime penalties and keeping recorders up to date so the current background check system works. They're fighting for changes that would actually make a difference not new laws that could be easily circumvented.

1.) That doesn't explain why the NRA is fighting it so hard

2.) I would love to see Keene's source on that number.

What if a poll came out that revealed 90% of the population supported background checks before you're able to speak in public without getting arrested? Would that mean we should do it?

If guns kill people and people don't, then why does obama take credit for killing bin laden instead of giving credit to the gun that killed him? Is he trying to have it both ways?

The NRA is going to fight any gun control measure to make the opposition work for their victories. If the anti gun crowd has to spend tremendous amounts of energy to pass small gun control laws it will deter them from going after the big stuff like gun bans and magazine caps.

Every time that a new gun control measure is granted to the anti-gun crowd, they immediately turn around and want more. So the NRA's stance is simply to oppose everything on principal and make the opposition fight. Many groups do this.

You fight meaningless restrictions and legislation because they are an inconvenience to your average person while provideing no benefit.

Here you go...

http://bjs.ojp.usdoj.gov/content/guns.cfm

Quote:
According to the 1997 Survey of State Prison Inmates, among those possessing a gun, the source of the gun was from -

a flea market or gun show for fewer than 2%
a retail store or pawnshop for about 12%
family, friends, a street buy, or an illegal source for 80%

During the offense that brought them to prison, 15% of State inmates and 13% of Federal inmates carried a handgun, and about 2%, a military-style semiautomatic gun.
On average, State inmates possessing a firearm received sentences of 18 years, while those without a weapon had an average sentence of 12 years.
Among prisoners carrying a firearm during their crime, 40% of State inmates and 56% of Federal inmates received a sentence enhancement because of the firearm.

Personal/street buys would be targeted as well.

Also, that's from 97... In the past decade and a half we have seen internet sales (which can go without background checks) explode. I highly doubt those numbers would still hold relevant today.

How do you know they can go on without a background check? If it's done to set up a FTF, then it's within local laws. If you ship it out of state, it has to go to an FFL.

I didn't say anything about it, he asked for the source and that is the one commonly referred too.

Private sales have gone on forever through periodicals similar to what you used to see for cars, and like those it has moved to the internet. I have seen nothing to convince me that these sales are a significant portion of guns used in crimes.

In every private firearm sale I have been involved in, which by now is more than two dozen, We exchanged identification, filled out a bill of sale, and most sellers required that I have a valid license to carry a concealed weapon. The vast majority of sellers are good, honest people that would not sell a weapon to someone who is suspicious.

If they would provide a means by witch private individuals can submit information tot he NICS themselves and complete the sale without paying an FFL it would probably be a lot more palatable for people, but as it stands I do not believe they will make any difference. You are still going to have the same illegal sales, straw purchases, and other circumventions of he background check system that already happen today.

You have the firearm shipped to a FFL from the internet
