Barrel kit, worth it?

Hey nation, so I've been doing some research on whether or not to get a barrel kit. A lot of what I've read state that a barrel kit is pretty much necessary if you travel and play in different atmospheric conditions a lot. I've also read that they improve accuracy and shot consistency when your paint to barrel are properly matched.

Then I've also read, that a tube is a tube, and that there are no differences what-so-ever, aside from sound signatures due to porting, and that kits are a waste of time. So after reading answers from both sides of the spectrum, I'm a bit confused as to where the truth actually falls.

So, any advice would be appreciated. Also, I plan on getting into competitive play next season, and since my home field isn't having indoor speedball this winter, I probably will be traveling a bit and playing at different fields during this off season.

I am currently looking at either a freak kit, a DW fibur, or a freak bored UL.

A kit is the way to go, you'll see drastic improvement over your stock.

Some decent options I'd look at it, if I were you:

Furious Lotus
Deadlywind w/Freak
Disruptive Products

I would say your first paragraph has the more accurate information when it comes to the barrels contribution to shooting. That being said, imo, its not really worth it.

First off, most barrels nowadays are pretty decent. Rarely will you buy a gun with horribly honed interior finish or somehow be crooked. With that being the case, I find good quality paint does far more for consistency and accuracy. The barrel to me is more like the icing on the cake. Great barrel and great paint (assuming gun is shooting well) is a great combo. But I simply use my .689 barrel on my ego all day long with all sorts of "good" paint. When I bore out properly with me CP kit, I don't see much of a boost in anything (with my untrained eye) other than air efficiency going up some.

When I play pump, I do need the kit to prevent roll outs. Thats all I use it for.

My take on kits & barrels in general is gonna make me sound like a grumpy old man who's afraid of change or science, and no one is gonna agree with me, but i'm throwing it out there:

Kits are poopoo. Keep it simple. If you play pump, .675-.680 (pick one bore, there's a varied range because no 2 companies seem to share a uniform tight bore). If you don't, get .689. If you play both, get 1 of each (usually cheaper than entire kits).

Well, I found myself a DW Fibur + insert kit for a real good price, so that's what I'll be rolling with.. I hear these barrels are pretty well sought after, plus I'm a sucker for carbon fiber.

Nice choice. DW fibur is the way to go.

As long as you don't fuzzy swab it should last a long while.

After doing some reading it says the DW is compatible with cotton swabs. Would it still be wise to avoid them to increase the life out of it, or is it safe?

Barrel kits are worth it if:
1) You play in tourneys a lot. In a tournament, you're going to playing with a lot of different paintballs. With a barrel kit, you're going to get better efficiency, and better consistency. But for rec play, it's not necessary. Just grab a CP or J&J or Smart Parts or something in like .689-.684 range.
2) If you pump. Stops rollouts.

So unless you're playing pumps or tourneys, I'd advise against it.

The other thing to consider is price. If you find a good deal on a kit it won't be a bad buy. Even if you don't gain much on a day to day use you may have a time or two where it comes in handy. Sometimes you can get a barrel kit tossed in with a marker or tank on the cheap. I grabbed a full freak kit for $60 in as new condition. You can't get some single barrels for that used. I wouldn't pay full new price for a kit but keeping an eye out for a deal is always a good idea.

you are not going to use 75 percent of the backs or inserts from a kit and balls seems to be getting smaller and smaller each year .

That's what I've heard, I got a good deal on a DW fibur + kit, everything I've heard about it is nothing but good.

Indeed. I have shot my DW fibur on my Axe for almost the entire time I have had it. Quiet, light, and damn sexy on "Royale with Cheese". It's so nice I bought one for my son for Christmas! And the folks a DW are great people. They sent along barrels with one insert to add to the Axes my charity raffles for fallen firefighters. No doubt. If you want a light, quiet, and versatile barrel with the use of freak backs, buy a Deadlywinds.

I'm a proponent of one bore + stock. For semi, you really don't even need that if your stock bore is around .689.

Everyday your gun should shoot fine out a .689. Those of us that choose to ticket will want the option of a closer bore. I was shooting Redemption up here in New England this year out a .679 insert. My sun shoots nice...lol.
