G5 Should I "pull the trigger" ?

I am getting back into the sport. Played rec ball throughout Highschool Semi-pro, and college ball for WVU. Shot everything from Mechanical Cockers, Shoebox Shockers, Angels, e-cockers, Bushmasters, Matrix's, and newer style Shockers. Smart Parts sponsored us in college so the Shocker was my last gat.

Anyways, I am considering the G5 as my first gun getting back into the sport. It's been 6 years since i've picked up a marker and from what I can tell the shocker spool and ego poppet's are still king.

I am not looking to spend a bajillion dollars however 2 grand for my full setup would be my max. I have a great job but I have a classic car and 2 motorcycles and a house money still gets poured into.

I would like to hear some information and advice if possible. Other DP gun recommendations are also welcome.

It's good to be back!

Well to start off I just ordered a g5. Most people will tell you to get a used g4 or g3 with a tech t bolt. Personally I'm not a fan of buying someone else's problems. Gl

It's a solid marker that does the job. The thing that lacks the most is the barrel but at the price you'll still have plenty for a barrel and whatnot

First off, the shocker is not still top dog of the spools, you have clones and luxes reigning supreme. As for poppets, egos are still near the top although g6rs are right there with them. The scene has obviously changed. But if your talking 2000 for your entire set up that's very possible to do with a much better gun than a g5. You could do it pretty cheap with empire soft goods, axe, ninja tank and a rotor. Or you can go really expensive (yet not topping your limit) used luxe 2.0, dye c12-13s, spire and a "special color" ninja. It's all your choice, and this should be in the versus forum. It will help you get less biased answers.

Plus nothing says "douchebag" better than an ego at a rec field! Which you most certainly are!

Wow, I guess people here are still as immature as they were 11 years ago when I first joined.

Didn't mean to be showing off. Apologies if it came off that way. Just meant to say I have real life things I need to pay for and not just paintballing. Nor do I have mommy and daddy around to help pay for stuff.

I plan on rec ballin' because, I haven't touched a paintball gun in 6 years. Thanks for the obvious statement.

My classic car and 2 motorcycles are money pits because they need work not because they are perfect and pristine. I was not trying to show them off. I was trying to explain I have other things that need money put into them. Same goes for the house. I have a house that's close to 100 years old and a 40 year old furnace, and 3 layers of shingles on the roof. Hurricane Sandy tore some shingles off and now we have leaks.

If you judge people on the field by how much their guns cost you have some issues dude. My shockers and dark angels were sponsor given guns. You think I would have turned them down so I wouldn't be judged? Hell No!

I did not mean Shockers were still top dawg, i meant the spool type mechanics and poppet style of ego are still top dogs.

Thanks for the info. I was not looking for a versus comparison just helpful info about the G5 and other DP products.

If you're buying new, then obviously the G5 is the latest (M3-A1 milsim is your other new option). Otherwise any used DP is a good value marker, even if it comes "broken" to you. A "broken" DP usually means it needs new orings, which the previous user probably didn't want to put the slightest effort into. A used FX is around the same price as or less then a new G5, and you get a lot of nice features.

I think a better issue to consider is do you want to spend the time looking for used stuff?

For the price range you have the g5 is going to be well within you budget. I would first recommend getting top of the line in regards to a tank and a hopper because they are things that don't change as often if you feel the need to have the latest and greatest later on. The better question is would you consider used or do you want to buy new. As for my recommendations it would be as follows

Hoppers:
The top 3 are dye rotor, empire z2 prophecy, virtue spire
I am currently using a spire but have a z2 as a backup

Tank:
Ninja
I only recommend ninja because they have the most amazing customer service and the products are top notch.

Pod pack:
I personally love my lysk magnetic pack but this is preference.

Mask/jersey/pants:
Personal preference

After you budget out how much you are going to spend on your gear I would then check to see what you have left for a price range on a gun/barrel. Hope this helps.

Thanks, helps a lot. I have no issues with buying used, in fact I have a long history of trading on these forums.

I was already looking at the virtue spyre and ninja 68 4500 tank. Also I still have my college jersey and pants although I need to lose 10lbs to fit in the pants . The magnetic pack looks interesting, I will have to check it out.

It's funny how much paintball has changed. My biggest question is what the hell happened to Redz Gear!?

The G5 is a good option. Not much aftermarket built up yet, but with the popularity of the G3/G4 I would expect that to follow shortly. And by aftermarket I really mean a new board and a Techt bolt. If you want to buy new then the G5 is a good option.

I would also look at a used G3/G4 and find one with a techt bolt and possibly an OLED board. They are all very simple markers so even when something goes wrong it typically only requires that you relube the bolt, maybe relube the reg, and every great while take the noid apart and put lube on it. From there, it's just a couple orings and nothing else to mess with. You can find deals on G3's down into the $150 range.

The used market also holds many of those top tier markers from 5-10 years ago priced in the $150-$250 range. You can pick up an NXT shocker for under $200. Boards for those have become dirt cheap. Lurker just released his bolt as well. A lurker bolt and a Virtue or Tadao board will update the old shocker into a marker that is as efficient as anything today, and as soft shooting as anything today, all for potentially under $250. Old Timmies, egos, DM's, PM's, Angels with OLED boards and 9volts, etc have all dropped drastically in price and will shoot with the best of today's markers. Just depends on what you're looking for.

Have you looked at the Valken Proton? There cheap and preform like high-end guns. And getting 9-10 pods on a 68/4500 for a spool is pretty impressive. The only thing you would probably wanna upgrade is the barrel. $325 retail and packed with features and tournament legal.

The proton is a good shooter but for me the on/off configuration and lack of upgrades that makes me not own one

Not really. I've owned an Axe and G6R after buying my G4. Guess what, both the Axe and G6R are sold and G4 is still here.
