Spyder Fenix chopping/ barrel breaks. Help!

I just purchased a spyder fenix 2012 online, and took it out to play yesterday. The first game, i had either a chop or a barrel break, I'm not really sure. This kept on happening all the way to the last game of the day, I had to clean out my barrel every 2 minutes. LITERALLY!

I took the eyes out at noon, and they were pretty much soaked in paint, but my barrel was too. My eyes are on whenever i play, so i don't know why it could be chopping.I use karnage burn, and haven't had any problems with it on my tippman, so i don't think it's the paint.

What happens is: I shoot normally, then i start walking the trigger fast, and then my gun starts bouncing and paint starts breaking. It always starts breaking as soon as my trigger bounces. I'm not really sure why it would bounce, as i turned down the sensitivity of the trigger right after my first game. It was fine for a while, then it started bouncing again.

I use HPA, and a NXe JRNY, which feeds fine. It also broke paint in my gun when i used my dxs Pulse. Both the hoppers were set at a reasonable speed.

The thing is, i can't tell if it's a chop or barrel break, if it were a barrel break, then i'm pretty sure the eyes won't be soaked, and the paint isn't too big for the barrel, its pretty matching. But i'm not too sure about chops, because my hopper is at 27bps, and I have eyes on my gun! I might turn the hopper down a little bit to see.

There was a shop owner at the field, that i took the gun to see if he could do anything about it, but he couldn't find any problems but said to use 9.6v spyder batteries, not 9v's.

Can anyone please help me? This is a brand new gun and i've no idea whats going on! Thanks

It sounds as though your eyes were registering that there was paint in the breech prior to the paint being there hence the chopping.

If you are able to, try increasing your bolt delay. This will allow your paint to sit in the breach nice and happy prior to being launched into oblivion.

At 27bps, your hopper might be forcing the paint to bounce off of the bottom of the breech, registering on the eyes, bounce back to the feedneck, and the bolt comes screaming towards it and slices the world in half.

Check your bolt to make sure there aren't any burrs on the bolt face that may be damaging your paint resulting in the chop.

Also, make sure you're not shooting too hot for the paint you're using. Your tippmann may have a different pattern as to how the air pattern is applied on the paint through the bolt.

Remember to clean your eyes thoroughly once you chop a ball, this will help prevent further chops as well.

My fenix only has very basic board settings. As far as i know, i can only change the firing modes, and tourney lock. I found that when my bolt resets, it leaves a little room for balls to slide backwards, maybe 2-4mm. It might be sliding backward, leaving a little space, then my hopper feeds another into the breach, causing it to be choped. Thats only a theory. But i still can't tell if its a chop or barrel break.

If there's paint inside the breech and on your eyes, then it's definitely a chop. Barrel breaks would result in most, if not all, the paint being in the barrel with a good spray as well.

I'm not sure... the eyes are covered in paint, but the barrel is too

Then you might have both. Check to make sure that your paint doesn't fall through your barrel, but has a little bit of friction on the bore.

And check your bolt for any burrs that may be damaging your paint as well.

Well my paint just rolls thru the barrel. I underbore to be safe usually. I called spyder and they said it was the paint quality i was using. I use karnage burn, but ive never had any problems before with it.

Turn down the velocity adjuster as well as the inline regulator pressure and see if that helps, if not it could be either the tension on the loader is too high or the front of the bolt isn't smooth enough or the paint.

Well what would be a good average speed for my hopper? I shoot around 13bps.

Check your bolt and breach first to make sure that's not the cause of the chopping.

Once you've decided that's not the issue, then move on to another possibility. Rule things out one at a time, and then you'll figure out the problem and how to solve it.

If semi, 20 bps is good, or if you play ramp, then 15 is all you need.

I know this is kinda off the subject, but wouldn't you want a little higher for psp ramping? in case your batteries are low.

Just gotta make sure all your equipment is running smoothly when you step on that field.. If you're batteries are dead when you go on the field, you can only blame yourself.

Plus you can have your hopper set to any BPS you want.. It's just the gun that has to be capped at a determined BPS.

Also, Zethis mentioned that 15 is all you need for ramping because it's capped. Semi is usually uncapped and therefore can reach a higher bps.

There has to be something wrong. The gun shouldn't chop paint, maybe blow it up in the breech but not chop if the eyes are set properly and nothing blocking them. Try shooting the gun without paint and see what it does, then try adding a few balls in at a time to duplicate it.

Did you look for burrs in the breech, maybe there is some extra bit of metal cutting the paint? Take the bolt out and shine a light in there to see what's up. If your not breaking paint when your plinking then try shooting fast again and see what's up. If you are still having issues then call our techs back, ask for Mike and tell him everything you went through.

I don't have a CO2 or hpa tank on me right now, so i can't really test it.

But did a quick experiment with no paint. I cocked the bolt back, turned eyes on, pulled the trigger. There was a 1 second delay after the trigger pull, then the bolt sprung forward.
It's not supposed to fire when cocked back with the eyes on. The eyes are clean.

Once again, i'm not using any source of air.

You need to call tech support when you have air available. Call 888-546-4626 ext 126, Michael will be able to help you out.

What kind of paint are you shooting? Might be bad or too brittle for the gun.The gun works fine with the eyes on and I'm willing to bet either your paint is the problem or your hopper isn't keeping up.

Ok, so i sent it in to spyder for a warranty. They said the microswitch was faulty, and they replaced it. I shot the fenix at the field, and it still chopped a TON of paint. My bolt would jam alot, something that didnt happen last time.

A asked a experienced player that day, and he said it might be that my hopper was a forcefeed and he lent me his VL revvy. Also, in case it was barrel breaks, he lent me his odyssey .93 barrel. I was using the same paint as last time (karnage burn). My gun chopped less paint with the revvy and the barrel. Still, it chopped, and the bolt jammed sometimes.

Later, i swapped a pod of my karnage burn for a pod of his paint. I couldn't remember what his paint was, but it was better quality than mine. I didn't chop any of his paint. Maybe it was because i was only shooting one pod of it, and since it only chops occasionally, it just happened that that pod was lucky. But i'm guessing the most factor was that the paint was better.

I'm guessing it's my paint, along with the combination of the force feed hopper not working well with my gun. Also, i can't seem to turn my velocity over 260fps

Still if it's not my paint, i'm done with this gun. They didn't fix it. What are my rights to get my money back for it? Thanks everyone

Your paint sounds as though it may be too brittle for your spyder or the shell may be too thin. Spyders tend to be harsh on the paint they shoot.

Hmm... also, the gun bounces alot. It only happens when the eyes are on. I walk the trigger, and let go, but the gun keeps shooting on it's own. It doesnt do that when the eyes are off.
