M98 Hell

ok first off I'd like to say that I'm not an idiot, thats what all idiots say but I've been futzing around on 98s since 2002. I'm also a mechanic and the BIGGEST thing I've learned while fixing cars is some times a car will turn you around in circles for hours and the best thing you can do is walk away and talk to someone about it...

so lets talk about it.

I bought 3 tippmanns at the beginning of summer, one classic 98, one custom rt and one custom. I put oil and air in then and tested them out. the rt would shoot once and then you would need to recock it repeatedly. I took the power tube and valve out of the other custom and threw it in, shot beautifully. so I went to the local field and he looked at the power tube and there were no cracks in it so we replaced the valve. Went home and installed a rear adjust and side cock (it was for a friend and he requested them) then put about 2 hoppers of paint through it and called it a day.

well he kept on saying to me, over and over during the summer that every once and a while he'd have to recock it during a game. well I tried and tried to find a problem and could never get anywhere. then someone said "why dont you just replace the powertube since thats the only thing in the gun left"

he had heard of these aluminum powertubes and was excited about them so I got this:
http://www.zephyrpaintball.com/produ...-Pro-Seal.html
and installed it.

now im back to the fire and reckock situation

Throw quite a bit of oil in the ASA (more than Mags). Dry-fire it repeatedly with the barrel off.

Go inside and give it a good cleaning concentrating on the trigger/sear area. Make sure the hammer/rear bolt o-ring fits properly. They tend to be too big, from my experience.

Have you ever heard of polishing the internals? Are you using CO2 or HPA?

I'm a mag user and I know the oil routine. The case, during the rebuild, was sandblasted, powdercoated, and internally polished

Does it sound like a stifled shot? Is it "farting"?

I know. Only one guy (owner) knew what my mag was at the field today.

Are the guns new or used?

I'm really out of ideas. I know r/t's do uncock every now and then after being shot. It's just how they are.

My A-5 (heavily upgraded internally) still uncocks itself after sustained rates of fire every now and then.

How often does it happen to him?

It's possible the powertube is cracked and not visible. But I'm still betting on maybe a worn sear that doesn't always catch or not having as much gas as he thinks in the tank. I've done that myself more times than I'd like to admit.

I doubt it's the sear. A non-catching sear would cause farting or a fully-auto sounding gun. Sounds like the powertube with a hairline crack.

I'd still fill it up and try again. Gauges are weird and 98s like a lot of pressure. If not not it's time to swap a power tube that you know is good.

I tried 3 different tanks with over 2000 on a fill, nothing.

Aluminum tubes suck, they usually arent very well made and can cause more problems than they can fix. Try putting a brand new plastic one in.

Not an ACT version, is it? Is the buffer o-ring back there dangling on the main spring?
