axe consistency/velocity problem.

I had a consistency problem at the field today, boss bolt, stock spring, 5 dwell and about 150 at the reg.and 1.5 out on the back cap. First 3 shots over the chrono were 274-280, then it dropped to the 250s and was all over consistency wise. I had to raise the reg to 180 with the back cap most of the way out just to get to the 270s and then my consistency was +/-20fps. At the end if the day I chrono'ed at 312 so I moved the back cap in a little and got it to the mid 270s-mid 280s, but it would still drop into the 260s and spike up to the 290s. Seems like a reg issue to me, nothing with my bolt should cause something like this should it? I saw another thread where oil in the asa was recommended for a possible reg issue, although he seemed to be having more shoot down.

Not sure if you're referring to my thread but yeah. I have similar problems. Going to short spring and going from there. I've heard moving the back cap isn't something you want to do when using the boss bolt. Is 1.5 just a starting point? Is there a maximum turns it can be at? It could cause inconsistencies. I'm starting to worry its my solenoid.

Are you over lubing your bolt?
Have you lubed your poppit?

Not trying to steal your thread but hopefully narrowing it down with some of the answers I got on mine.

Yeah, it looked like some of your issues were similar, but there are some differences too. I got my axe used and am still trying to figure out what all is on it. Got it from someone who had gotten it in a trade of some sort and didn't know what they had.. I believe I have the stock spring in there, because there aren't any other springs in the parts kit, there are boss O rings, and other stock parts are in there, that have been replaced by upgrades.
I don't think I've over lubed it, yeah the poppet is lubed.
I didn't know what etiquette was around here for jumping in on your thread when it looked like it had been a little while since the last post. Maybe should have just put this there.
This was the first time I had the axe out at the field and I started it out with the settings I saw recommended for that bolt. I don't have access to a chrono so it's going to be hard for me to get this straightened out.
Did you try oil in the asa?
Thanks
Collin

Yeah if it's not too old it's cool to bump. But anyway, I got mine brand new so I'm going to call Kee tmrw and see if what they think. I will try putting the oil in the Asa when I get home Friday. Lemme know how the oil works. Have you tried the stock bolt to see if it gives you problems? Sorry if you mentioned that. It's a Long post so I might have missed it.
I was also asked if my tank reg was any good.
Maybe a new battery?

The closest chrono is at a field 45 min from me so I'm not sure when I'll know how it works. I haven't tried stock yet, and the battery and tank are good. Without having it over a chrono I can't tell, except that my accuracy sucks too. Good luck with yours too, I'll let you know if anything works for me.

Another thing. Try watching your pressure gauge as you shoot. Is the psi all over the place?

Ok, just in my garage, no chrono, pressure holds even when fired, unless dry fired, then it wavers. I tried adjusting the reg and the change in pressure didn't register until I turned off the relay. I turned it back on, then it registered when adjusted. Went ahead and put some oil in there and ran a hopper thru it, plus some dry firing. We'll see.

So wait I'm confused. So the needle moves around when fired? Which is normal. But yeah. A chrono would help

Yeah, it held fairly steady when fired, just wavered no spikes, no drop offs. I tried adjusting the pressure after my first shots and the needle just stayed put, even though I was lowering the pressure significantly. I turned the asa off and the needle dropped to zero. I turned the asa on and the gauge showed that I had lowered the pressure. At that point I adjusted some more and the needle moved as I made the adjustments. The first time it seemed like it was stuck. Sorry this is so wordy

Dying and a low voltage battery can cause solenoid and dwell inconsistencies which show on the chrono.

I hadn't considered that as a possible cause, because I always put a fresh battery in before each day of play. However, when I can finally get to a chrono I'll put a new one in , to at least eliminate that as part of the problem.

Oh man, good luck. I hope it's all squared away by then. I'm just a rec baller who wants his new toy to work the way it should. That's all I have riding on this...is there someone you could loan from, just in case? I'd offer to ship you mine, but you'd just be back at square one. Busted axe, as a back up to a busted axe...

Im surprised no one has mentioned paint/bore size. Whats bore is your barrel, and whats your under/over bore looking like? If its not a somewhat significant underbore, then you will never reach consistency over the chrono.

I'm just using a .689 barrel. With the same barrel, same paint, my auto cocker is +/-6fps and same paint with a.689 on my ion was about the same. I'm looking at +/-20fps on the axe. I also have a freak kit but haven't gotten a cocker back for it yet.

Try going back to a stock setup with the stock bolt and see if you still have these issues...

That's something else I'll be trying next time I get to a chrono.

Wow man! i appreciate the gesture! Yeah I've got a few friends and a back up gun (the good ole trusty ion haha). I'll let you know as soon as I know.

And in reference to under boring. Look for the punkbuster video about barrels. Don't underbore too much so you don't break paint.

The whole time my ion keeps shooting like a champ, nice and smooth. I loaned it to a friend this weekend and wish I had just used it instead. I'll check out the video on under boring today.
