This is why the average person's opinion on firearms, firearm safety and gun control are completely void of any credibility.

Clearly it's a Russian invasion, apparently he never watched Red Dawn.

However, we'd all be better off if they were allowed to carry a gun, right?

I posted this on another forum in a thread about the mall shooting in Oregon:

I'm actually pretty much in agreement with Heinlein's whole thing in TMIAHM with the everyone having guns argument.

I do wonder though about the extent of human stupidity, considering the access to weapons in the inner city and people still committing trivial offenses to someone's ego and getting killed for it. I mean, Heinlein hypothesized that people would be calmer under the constant threat of death, but I'm not so sure.

However, I do believe an armed(or at least presumed to be armed) populace might stop someone from doing this sort of crap.

On the other, other hand, they tend to be psychos who kill themselves in the end, so death may not be a big deterrent.

Guess this post accomplishes nothing.

American exceptionalism aside, I think there's something wrong with our culture.

Non-drug/gang related public shooting thingoes in the rest of the developed world: once every year, at most.

In the USA? Once every month, at least.

We might just have a problem.

*this is separate from violent crime in general, in which the USA doesn't rank as high as some other countries.

I think there should be stiffer penalties for negligence.

Quote:
A Pennyslvania man accidentally shot and killed his 7-year-old son in a gun store parking lot yesterday, when his pistol went off in his hand, police tell the AP. The boy, Craig Loughrey, was strapping himself into his safety seat when his father Joseph, 44, set down a 9mm on the dashboard. The gun went off, hitting Craig. Loughrey says he had removed the gun's magazine earlier, and hadn't realized a bullet was still in the chamber. "This happens all too often," one police officer said.

If you think the proliferation of firearms in the USA is A) attributable to anything but culture and/or B) reversible, you're living in a fantasy world.

No. Don't know why you assume that this is my position.
People are retarded with firearms.

I wrote a massive paper on this in college. Will go into it more later if I feel up to it, but it's an argument no side is willing to compromise with, let alone listen to the other side. That is what my plan called for, listening and compromise.

If the government is going to mandate any policy with firearms, it should be a training course certification for anyone before buying their first firearm. Hell, everyone for that matter. Educate. Unfortunately, this costs money; something we don't have a surplus of.

Why is it such a big deal when a few people get shot? Cell phones needlessly kill over 2,600 people a year, but I don't see that in the news.

You can't put the genie back in the bottle wrt access at this point. Whatever solution is posited needs to take enforceability into consideration. I think requiring safety mechanisms against accidental discharge is the first step. Idiots gon idiot, regardless. Take unregistered guns off the street by all means, but I don't think completely closing off the option to carry is particularly efficacious

My solution is to make legal and easily accessible for ownership all munitions that were currently being manufactured in 1791. Everything else is illegal.
