I think that may be in the running for the gif of the year. I spent a solid 2+ minutes just watching it and laughing
Knowing next to nothing about Best Korea, I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess this whole dog and pony show was less about the satellite it launched into orbit and more about N. Korea showing the world it could send a rocket into orbit. Has it even been confirmed that the object is actually a satellite and not a 100 lb. bag of dog food?

A satellite is by definition anything orbiting a planet... the moon is a "satellite"

There has been no unclassified report about the flying, 100 lb Best Korea bag of dog food.
NORAD is watching it like a dingo watching a baby.

You can use free software and the two line element sets from NORAD to track it. They monitor everything in orbit larger than a softball.

Cool thanks for that. My boss thanks you too, seeing that I wasted over an hour dicking around with the last 30 day launch TLE's.

I know it's probably pure speculation, but how long has this been floating around? Did they fund the April launch?

My qualms isn't with their launching of a weather satellite (although its launch into sun-synchronous orbit draws questions about whether or not it's actually a weather satellite), but how they launched it. iirc, they used a system to launch it that is more commonly used to launch ICBMs. This is not OK.

It is very accurate, but they update the TLE periodically and it changes the model slightly each time. If you used the same data for too long the error in the model will grow to the point where it is useless.

They launched it using rebuilt Soviet ICBMs. They have also successfully tested nuclear weapons. They only have two more obstacles now to overcome and then they have an ICBM.
1. Mounting the warhead to the rocket (difficult but not that difficult)
2. Accurate reentry (that's the tricky part).
Theyre most likely still 5 years + away from ICBM technology, if we dont stop them first. I'm not confident for them, they believe that Kim Jong Il invented the hamburger and his son found a unicorn lair.

Their nuclear tests were hardly successful, and they almost certainly do not have a viable nuclear weapon. Their rocket tech is far from what it needs to be for a viable ICBM, and their rate of progress is so slow that it is doubtful they will reach such capacity any time soon.

The miniaturization of a practical warhead is NOT easy.
Gotta go from

Their current missile, the Taepodong 2, is already at the cusp of ICBM. If it works reliably is another story.
