Military firefighters
any of you guys here? iv always wanted to join the Military at least for one tour, but i also want to be a firefighter. While i was always planning to be an Infantry officer my whole life since i was little iv made some career changes. I want to be a officer Firefighter in the AF, then go out into the civi world and get a job with a department.
anyone ever do something similar to this? how did it work out. Did you face any obstacles that you didn't count on in the process?

I know a few guys who want to be firefighters. (Down at MEPS). Haven't heard from them, but it seems like it'd be pretty cool.

CFR is all contracted out really now a days. I'm a Fire Fighter, and a Marine in the infantry.
Regardless of you being an officer and spending 4 years at least on active duty as a fire fighter. If you can get a job in a full time department you have to go through their Academy again, and you're a boot status again.

not always. I've been to a lot of air bases, and talk to their CFR since that has been my dream for a while and they're not in the AF. All the Marine bases and Army bases I've been on have civilians for their Fire Departments. I'm sure there is some CFR units that are 100% military. I mean the people who go in to rescue down pilots I'm guessing are part of CFR, since the R in CFR is Rescue(case fire rescue).

Navy/Coast Guard - everyone is a firefighter. You can specialize in it by going Damage Control. There are also three USCG operated fire departments - Baltimore Shipyards, TRACEN Cape May, and one in Alaska (Kodiak iirc).
I also spoke with a few Marines who were airport firefighters in Iraq. I can't really speak on that one, I'm not a Marine and I only spoke with them for about an hour.

I'm at goodfellow AFB where they do the firedog schooling for all the branches.
Slso probably unrealistic to think you can come in as an officer and do the job you want, officers are needs of the military, only way you can get it guaranteed is by going enlisted.
Their training area is pretty cool though, **** tons of cargo and fighter planes that they set on fire for training.
