I think you took what he said wrong. If I'm not mistaken, he is simply stating that instead of dwelling on what has already happened, he is trying to be prepared so that for example, if he is in the mall and hears gun shots and happens to be carrying a weapon, he will know how to react and will be able to defend himself and his loved ones, and maybe even be the "hero".
I'm certainly not saying that memorials are meaningless, considering I was born and raised in Blacksburg, the place of the deadliest school shooting in U.S. history. I see every year thousands of people gather in the center of town for the memorial service, and it's pretty damn crazy. Even people who weren't enrolled at Virginia Tech the during the shootings show their pride and support.
Then again, after several shootings resulting in police deaths and a beheading in the middle of the street, our police and SWAT teams don't **** around one single bit. If even the slightest hint of an incident is reported, the town is locked down, ATF, DEA, and FBI are all brought it.
