I am new to pump play and I like the Phantom, it is so much lighter and I play open class, rec ball. Now a lot of guys like the cocker based pumps such as the sniper or the CCM stuff. What is best really depends on what your going to play and what you want out of it. Me lightness is a big deal.
Some want to play stock class (Stick feed and 12gr co2) and the best for that is a phantom or other nelson valve based markers (Think Gargoyle or Carter) Some play open class, (hopper, air tank) and a lot of people say the sheridan valve pumps are bet for that (Think Empire sniper, Sanchez Machine or the CCM) So just like ego vs geo the "BEST" is incredibly subjective.
Just imagine you got 2 players: Player one who has been playing for a few years went out and bought the fanciest fastest shooting, coolest looking marker is all excited about it. Guy #2 lets say for argument is a pro player who just stopped by the field to say hi, and for what ever reason grabs a rental Tippmann and mask for a game. Do you really think all that $$$ player one spent matters one bit?
If this were a betting game, and maybe it should be, my $$$ is on the skill not the gun.
With that said go look at a few, try both styles, both have have near unending custom possibilities, get what FEELS best to you.

^ This should be stickied somewhere. Then pasted to all new threads asking the same basic question. Well said.
Peace-

I was considering putting it in my sig. But its to long.
Anyway I would rather answer a question as opposed to chastising someone.

That all depends on your price range and whether you're willing to buy used.

No it doesn't. the question is what is the best?
I answered by saying what feels the best is the best. And suggested why I like the Phantom cost does not matter.
Weather you have $1500 or $15 to buy a marker, how does the amount of money you have change what is actually the best marker.
I may think a diamond crusted Geo3 with a pump kit is the best, the fact that I could not afford it does not change that it is the best.
(Please note I am un-aware of the existence of a pump kit for the Geo3 and have no idea if it would be any good. Just using it as an example. Although I vote against diamond crusting your marker.)

I see what your saying. But you may find that a CCM frame for that phantom is the most comfortable thing, just don't know it yet.
It's hard to choose if you haven't held a few different options in your hand.

Carry and target guns have the same angled grip as my phantom, never got anything but slide bite from anything CZ, although a mainspring hump would be nice.
Got to try a few, at least at a range to get some sort of feel.

I'm just dipping my feet into pump play and I bought a used trilogy cocker for really cheap. I had an extra cp reg and asa laying around to get rid of the horrible braided hose on the thing. I got a brand new pump kit on ebay for $28 and have under $100 into a pump gun and it's a lot of fun so far.
