Looking for cheap paint suggestions
Hey Guys,
I'm wanting to take my cousins paintballing, since they've never been before, and I want to get them the best price possible for paint. The field that we would play at allows ANY paint in rental guns. The field charges $40 for a case, which I personally don't have a problem with. That's a reasonable price for paint, however, are there cheaper cases of paint so that I could help my cousins out a little? I personally don't buy paint from non-paintball places, such as K-Mart, Dicks Sporting Goods, etc and don't recommend others buying from there either because of the poor quality. As us regulars know paintball can be very expensive.
What are ya'lls thoughts on the following paints for 1 time players? Please take the "bounce" factor into consideration, because the paints that don't break usually hurt more. Also, please take into consideration
paints that will screw up your gun as well (breaks, jams, etc.)
JT Elite
JT Recreational
Spyder Black Label
JT/RPS Stinger
RPS Toxin (I saw a thread on here DO NOT USE because they bounce)

I agree. However, most fields are field paint only and it really depends on what field you go to. For example 140 where he's at lol and in Indiana cases range from 40-60 a case. So it just depends on your location really. Once again if it is NOT a field paint only type of field I suggest Wal-Mart. And to insure that your paintballs dont bust in the case you could carefully take the bag out, put a towel in the box/case, then carefully pour the paintballs into the box/case. Hope this helps.

Hey thanks for the help/info guys, I really appreciate it! I have a few questions though about quality and breakage...Is Wal-Mart paint really that bad? I've heard because paint has been sitting too long it can settle and make your paint not shoot straight, etc. I've also heard that too brittle paint can cause gun jams, barrel breaks, and spending more time fixing rather than playing. Finally, balls that don't break tend to hurt a lot more. What are ya'lls thoughts? Again, I want them to have a good first experience and get into the sport.

if you want it to hurt less then buy a good paint at a field thats fresh.. almost any cheap paint from a random store is gonna be hard as marbles.. it wont shoot straight, and you may end up with busted paint in the bags.
I personally recommend all newbies start out with a good mid range ball at their local field for their first time. something like a custom blend, premium, recsport, 3star, etc.
you start someone out with ****ty paint and they'll think it hurts a lot more and that paintball guns are stupidly inaccurate.
Theres also a reason many fields require the better paints in their equipment.. ****ty paint jams guns up because its not very round, and its so hard that the bolt doesnt have enough impact to simply break the ball.
of your listed options i guess id say get stingers.. but tell them to layer up and wear gloves.. lol...

oh and while what you heard about walmart paint settling is partially true.. consider for a moment that walmart paint is also usually made from gelatin regrind (aka all the waste shell from other paint reground up and made into a paintball) and isnt even close to being round in the first place. good paint is made from virgin gelatin.
Lastly, consider your average first time player goes through 500-1000 rnds the first time they play.. they likely wont even shoot a whole case each, so they could just split the case of mid range paint (which will also break more, and fly straighter thus lowering consumption) and end up spending less each.

it is better to show them a taste with good-great paint, than to use cheap paint. especially if they are shooting each other.
spend the extra $$$ and get a quality paint from a reputable store.

I totally agree and enough said. I just need to make the point to them that spending a little extra will give you good quality paint and make the day more enjoyable than crappy paint. BTW has anyone ever shot/used JT/RPS Stinger? What's it like?

poopy like any cheap paint. bounces and hurts more then dxs basic training and even spectrum. doesnt really fly very straight. works okay indoors when you dont have to contend with wind.

Is he buying paint for everybody else at the field to shoot at his cousins? Not sure how a more brittle paint helps there, unless everybody on the field is using it. The two pb stores in my area were all sold out of anything all star/silver and up, so I made a run to sports authority. If you have one by you they are selling x ball midnight for $30/case. The cases actually have the ship date on them, so you can get an idea of how long they've been sitting. I always open them and look at each bag anyway. The stuff I got today was nice and round no breaks in any of the bags. I haven't shot midnight yet, but I really like x ball podium series for $40/case. Midnight gets decent reviews, used to be dxs midnight.

Just get them to split on a case, that's only $20 each. Are they poor?

I'm not buying this paint for me. I already have good quality paint, however the paint I'm looking into is for my cousins so they can save a little extra cash. Personally, $40 a case for field paint is OBVIOUSLY the best solution for them to use.

Draxxus Midnight from Sports Authority.
-decently brittle shell (comparable to Kee Premium)
-good fill (baby blue color, kind of pasty)
-low-mid .680s bore (can vary per batch, storage, and climate)
-priced pretty well (currently on sale for 30)
-coupons frequently available to drop price further
not bad, coming from a regular shooter of Kee's premium to tourney grade paintballs. some of the regular players at our field have started using this paint over Kee and Karnage paint, it is not just due to the price difference.
as always, check the date on the box.

Between today and two weeks ago I have shot both empire custom blend and diablo heat. From my experience the heat was hands down the winner. The custom blend had way to many fliers. Even the refs noticed! I finally shot it all and bought some heat at the field. It shot much straighter but my friends were telling me they were bouncing. (Note I was shooting a stock etek 3 with a freak kit and the correct bore size based on an average of ten balls.)
