Need some help! New player with tons of questions!

Hey guys,

I am a high school student in St. Louis Missouri. I have been playing paintball for about 4 years now at birthday parties and retreats and such, but now I want to get into the sport more competitively.

I'm lucky to live in an area with lots of speedball and airball fields, so I really want to play that. I'm not a huge fan of woodsball in my brief exposure to paintball.

I have tons of questions to ask, about markers, internals, upgrades, gear, etc.

I was wondering if someone could perhaps give me some tips or advice.

I just need someone who is willing to answer a ton of questions.

Have a budget in mind and that will get you a long ways with what we can suggest as for gear and going to a local proshop can answer almost any and all questions you may have.

I'm looking to spend around $1000 for my gun and gear. That's pretty much all I know. I want a marker that is speedball ready, and a hoppe that can feed well. A mask that doesnt fog is a must too.

Are there any parts to put on guns to make them better? Like upgrades?

Honestly I would get a geo 2/2.05 for like 550, a used rotor v3, or a z2, a carbon fiber tank used for around 100(relatively new) (get ninja), and then buy a new mask (I don't like used masks) like a proflex or eflex. Then get other gear like pods, pack, pants, pads. For those you will need to go to your pros hop to make choices.

Btw you shouldn't have the mentality of making a gun better by upgrading it. Most Guns perform great as long as they are well kept.

Honestly, it is not necessary to upgrade most guns. It really doesn't make a difference. And okay, $1000 is your budget then. Their are several possibilities you could do. It all depends on your preferences too.

Well what are my options? I want the best gun I can get. I've been looking at guns in the $700-$900 range and gear around $200 all together. I can go over budget if need be.

Just don't skimp on the mask. That's your most important piece of equipment.

what you need to realise is you can just buy a used high end marker in the $500 range that will perform just as well as the latest and greatest. not much has changed in the last 4 years between markers. besides, once you start looking at guns that cost over $500 new they all pretty much do the same thing, its just a matter of picking out the one you like best. no need to just jump for the most expensive one you can afford, its not necessarily "better". also once your in that price range you dont need to bother with upgrades as those guns came stock with top of the line stuff.08-09 highends can easily be found around $500 now. that leaves about $60-$100 for a nice mask, another $100ish for a used tank, and for playing apparel like pants and jerseys you can always find last years line for sale. that way you get new gear at a discount. buy pants before you go for a jersey. jerseys are optional, but a decent pair of pants is good to have for the built in knee padding and other features.

$1000 is plenty, you should be able to buy everything you need and still have money left over. easily.

Save your money for some paint. It makes little sense to get the most expensive marker you can get, only to play one or two times a year.

Can you get in contact with a local team or go and talk to a few guys at your local field? I say this because I'm fairly new to paintball and that's what I did. They we're perfectly fine with letting me use they're guns or at least shoot a pod or two. I've used pmr's, dm6's, axes, shockers, dm12's, ethas, Geo 2.1, Geo 3, ego7, ego11, and even a luxe 2.0. It all depends on how it feels when you play with it. I prefer an ego over a Geo. As for gear id get a mask that feels comfortable(fog can be fixed with a $5 bottle of anti-fog), which is another thing people might let you use. Then I'd get a pod pack, doesn't have to be crazy especially since your starting out you can always upgrade later. As for hopper I'd get a used rotor. Any ? Message me!

You need to go to your local feild and see what they have. Certain hoppers, markers, and tanks go together better if you haev them in your hands

I'd suggest
1. e-flex or proflex brand new. I like the bottoms a lot, easiest to breathe and communicate through, and gets a fair amount of bounces.
2. Used ninja tank in 68/45 or whatever size feels most comfortable to you with the new style adjustable regulator, has 2 o-rings on the bonnet. Make sure to check the hydro date and the clear coat on the tank.
3. Used v-3 rotor with the anti-jam shark fin.
4. Nice set of new pants, I like JT but any well known name will make great pants(empire, planet eclipse, hk, dye etc...)
5. Used Luxe 1.0 or Planet eclipse geo 2.0 or 2.1
6. Just about any pod pack, I like nxe but it doesn't matter too much.

That's my opinion on what I think a good setup is in your budget, but you should definitely try out as many markers as you can at your field and masks and playing equipment at your local shop.

P.S.
If you plan on playing strictly airball I'd recommend some cleats.

Well it looks like a ton of people have offered options, they are great. Used is the way to go for most people, especially since paintball guns don't hold their value very long, just recently I saw a dm12 go for $550.

If you have any questions regarding play or anything, pm me

Thanks for the advice, guys.

I hate to sound like a preppy brat, but I would only want a gun new. I know this sounds crazy but i have had bad experiences with used things and though I am sure paintballers are trustworthy I would like to buy a new gun to call my own. The feeling of holding a gun that I bought new just doesnt get old. I know it sounds lame, but I hate used things.

And I will be playing much more than once or twice a year. I expect to play at least twice a month maybe more if I find that I really like it.

I'll go to my local shop and maybe feel around a couple markers and see what I like. Are there any brands and manufactures that I should buy or stay away from?

Markers
-Highly recommend Planet Eclipse Geo 3 ($1,345) or Ego 11 ($995), or any ego or geo. DLX Luxe 2.0 ($1500). Or Bob Long G6R ($995).
-Stay away from Dangerous Power
Masks
-JT, Empire. A thermal mask is what you need.
-JT pro-flex, Empire Events, Empire Eflex mask brand new will run you around $100
Hoppers
-My favorite, Dye Rotor. Empire Z2 and Virtue Spire are nice though.
-Stay away from Valken V-Max, Halo hoppers, or Invert hoppers
Tanks
-Ninja or Guerilla. Highly recommend either. Carbon fiber tank is what you want. Aluminum are too heavy. A brand new carbon fiber tank (4500 psi is what you want) will run around $100-$180.
Podpack
-Lot of good ones. NXes are my favorite. There is also HK, Planet Eclipse, Empire, Valken, Dye, etc all make good podpacks.
-Decent one will run you anywhere between $40-$60.
Pants
-Lot of good ones. HK, Planet Eclipse, JT, Valken, Dye, Empire, Draxxus.
-Brand new pans will run anywhere between $80-$180.
Elbow pads
-Planet Eclipse, Sly, Dye, Empire.
-Run between $30-$60
Knee pads
-Same as elbow pad manufacturers
-Run between $20-$40.

There's nothing wrong with halos, just for the price they are new I'd rather spend $50-60 more for a rotor. Not really a fan of empires loaders though, since the reloader b anyway.

Great, thanks for the help.

Right now I am considering purchasing the Boss Axe or the Planet Eclipse Ego 2011. Are those good options?

And I have heard good things about the invert too being a good hopper.

Thanks.

I'd definitely suggest shooting an axe before buying one, the ergonomics aren't for everybody but they are pretty good shooters. I like the halo too, it keeps up and hasn't jammed on me yet, but i suggest getting the rip drive for it if you buy one.

i would much rather buy a used prophecy than an invert too. the too is just a revamped halo b. its a great loader, but you can buy something nicer for about the same price. or just buy a used halo b v35 or vlocity for $40.

lots of people love the rotor...i never saw why. too expensive for what it is imo, and they have a reputation for jamming and being finnicky with certain paint. yes they are very simple, and thats a good thing, and the battery life is great, but i dont feel i should be paying more for less just for simplicity's sake. if it was priced closer to compete with the pinokio it would make much more sense imo.

you get more for your money with an empire loader to me. ive had a prophecy since they've came out and never had issues with it. the new virtue loader looks really cool too, simple like a rotor, drive train more similar to a halo with some really cool ideas, and some adjustability. ive heard lots of good about it.
