Ideas for holding tryouts

Hey nation so my team is holding tryouts this weekend and it is going to be a pretty big turnout...What are your thoughts on do's and don'ts for holding these things. List up your favorite things to find potential players (drills, games, talks ect...) Thanks in advance!!

Depends on psotions somewhat, but run some snap drills, sprints, practice games, 1v1s, 1v2s, etc. When I was a team captain I found the chats with potentials are very important, sometimes more so than drills and practice. Find out their dedication, mentality, and experience. If they can't click with the team and aren't willing to learn, then it doesn't matter how good they are.

Great info I was kind of thinking along the same lines about talking with the potential players

I coach a team in the northern VA area. The one thing that I look for above ANYTHING else is attitude. The last thing you want entering your team is a cancer who is just going to complain and destroy the morale of the team.

1v1 are always good.

and like they said earlier, depends on position. If you're looking for front snake players, time people running to snake on break - look for speed. And then their ability to get small and snap shoot.

back players - watch their technique on how they lane off the break and if they are willing to shot 10 pods at nothing ( an open lane ) to keep people from moving up that side of the field. And if they communicate really well.

insert guys - very good field awareness of where everyone is, on both sides.

and really a good positive attitude, if they are willing to work with everyone else or be a critic.

try 1v2s , 1v3s high pressure situations.. Make sure they are financially stable and can afford to make it to most if not all of your practices.

Things we've done recently at tryouts:
1. Run from D corner to snake corner, slide in, shoot a target behind the corner on the other side of the field, dive into snake and crawl to the 50, then wrap and shoot a target at one of the doritos. This will show speed, sliding/diving skills, and getting their guns up and on target quickly.
2. 1 on 1's until everybody's out.
3. Scrims to end off the day.

Make sure players realize how busy they'll be as a member of your team and what you expect from them. See how they can fit in with the players already on your team and if their attitude will help them mesh with your players, or if you see there being any problems.

When I run our try-outs I look for a positive attitude above almost everything. I don't want to bring someone into my organization that's not going to mesh with the rest of the team and cause drama, or is just looking to jump on for a few events. I look for players that are looking to develop, have fun and have some skills already. (although not always needed).

I put players through the paces of one of our practice days first. (keeping things more brief) and at a faster pace.

We usually run some warm up laps and stretch out then play a few games to let everyone get into a groove. We watch and play with the those trying out in these games to get a feel for how they can follow a game plan and execute, as well as think on their feet and general game skills/aggressiveness.

After this we start running drills, 1v1's, snap shooting, laning, and a conditioning drill that keeps players moving constantly.
These all push together to give a good picture of how a player will play in a given situation. we take short breaks and run games throughout to break up drills and see how players handle different situations.

If a player gets bored and complains they only want to play games odds are they won't fit in with us, we drill and drill a lot. If they look for a way to have fun doing even some of the more bland drills these are the people I like to see come out. Be there to have fun yet play seriously/competitively.

We also interview players throughout the day to see why they are looking to join a team.

At the end of the day I ask my assistant capt. and team manager what they each think and get recommendations from my current players while the try-outs play some last games. This gives us a last look and a few min to chat about who we want and don't want.

We then talk to the prospects and invite them to join as a probationary member.
