Wait, they're not called shotguns?
No joke, the first time I saw a pump I said to the guy "Thats a pretty sick looking shotgun!" he laughed his butt off the whole game.

the game becomes more of a mental exercise and skill challenge by playing with a pump. there are other advantages also.
-lighter weight setups
-no batteries
-less complex setups, less to go wrong
-save paint and allows you to shoot high end paint
-money saved can be used for more pump stuff
-makes your weaknesses more visible
-lets you be more sneaky sneaky
-makes you focus on your first shot accuracy

lol i just learned why i havent bought paint from walmart in like 3 years. i got a case of stingers and they would curve in every direction. that made playing pump extremely hard. i had just as much trouble shooting that crap in my g6r to. it was a bad day.

Without writing and essay. Pump is like the difference between playing normal mode and Hardcore in COD. Its also forces you to make your shots count, get way better at snap shooting and moving. I love that most pump guys i meet dont feel like they have any disadvantage to the electro guys. My buddies always say. "only takes one shot to send them to the dead box"

Omg Are You Stupid?!?!?!
Do you know how much skill it takes to be able to sucessfully play pump? Use a pump next time you walk onto a speedball field. Pretty easy right? -__- The point is to make your paintballs count. Plus, pump guns are MUCH more accurate and have a much higher air efficiency. The point is to make your paint count. You walk onto a speedball field with 1500 paitballs. You walk out with a pump, your holding a max of 200. My friends plays pump and he can go an entire day on 1/2 a bag of paint and still get 80 or 90 hits

pump guns are not any more accurate than speedball guns. it depends on the player. also most pumps are actually less efficient than modern speedball guns.

As for pump paintball, I got into it because I was tired of being "that guy" on recball day. I like to play the game, and I want to play hard, but sometimes it's just not in the cards. Some fields don't necessarily draw a good cross section of people, and it's ludicrous to go out with a full electro setup against rentals and first timers. There's a point where the game isn't fun for anyone anymore. No challenge for me, too much of a challenge for the other people, then having to deal with the resulting fall-out. Did you know that most new players, and even occasional players, aren't necessarily OK with eating an entire "rope" of paint? Even if it was an accident? Trust me, they aren't.
I made the switch to pump and all of those problems went away. Other players are more at ease b/c you don't have a big, bad machine gun. I'm more at ease because I can play as hard as I want and not have to worry about over shooting, or folks complaining about, "well he has a faster gun" or what have you. It just makes things work better.
If you're really that curious, I'd suggest what a couple of the other people here have suggested; pick up a Trilogy Pump on the cheap, or a Trilogy Cocker and do a conversion. That's exactly how I got into pump ball. I bought a Trilly Tactical for $65 and a Sanchez Machine pump kit for $50-ish, threw it all together (took about 10 minutes and I had ZERO experience with Cockers at the time) and had a neat little gun to go out and play with.

I'd love too.
I don't even own pods so go **** yourself.
Yes, but regardless of how you play, COD is still 50 bucks. You can run around or shoot, it's all the same price. If you wanted to try out pump it would be hundreds more. I don't see why you can't just keep the gun you have and not walk the trigger.
And thanks for actually being one of the few to help out.
Tried a search, came up dry.

Ahh now I see where your coming from.
Many old-schoolers started on pumps, the first paintball guns were single shot then chamber another ball. Ergo, pumps/stock class is considered the "base" paintball marker.
Other people choose to 'downgrade' to pump because of the reasons mentioned, it conserves paint in addition to adding a self-imposed handicap -> which makes the player have to compensate with pure SKILL instead of BPS.
As for you, it sounds like you already have an electro or something. So, playing pump to you WOULD be an increase in money needed. For most of the older players, it was the other way around... start with a pump and MOVE UP TO a semi.
You CAN do fine not walking the trigger on your electro. If your looking to save money / improve skill that would be the cheapest /best route to go.
Still doesn't give as much of a self-imposed handicap (read - bragging rights) as a pump though.

In all honesty I probably shoot almost as much paint playing pump as I do electro. I've had people tell me I thought you brought your pump out, thinking I was shooting a semi. Accuracy is the same as any other tuned gun. Pump players just take more time with their shots. I play pump pretty much all the time. But I'm in a weird situation. I'm better than the avg. rec player, but don't have the time or money to do tournament ball. So a pump was a middle ground for me. I could still play with friends, and not get in trouble for being too aggressive. But still keep up the challenge and skill I desired. But I'm also one of those people that enjoys paintball for the game. I play both scenario and speedball and love both for separate reason. But I have been told I'm a little meaner when I bring my pump out. (it's pink btw.) It's just a different experience. More snapping, and less posted out spraying and praying.
