im getting a laptop and have no idea what pretty much anything means when i get asked for options. im mainly getting this for school, but i also want to play some games on it as well (i want newer games to run smoothly and nicely) i can spend just about any amount of money, but preferably less because the less i spend on a laptop, the more i have for other stuff. any help would be greatly appreciated.

OA Baller- find out what type of ram it is, then go to newegg and buy it. Then you should have installation guides in the instruction manual....
Ag-Ryan2- go to dealcatcher.com and look around for deals on a Dell Inspiron E1505, upgrade to the highest graphisc card, get at least the cheapest core duo processor, at least 1 gig of ram, and the upgraded screen.. your set

1.8 ghz dual core, or single core.. If its single, not really, but if its dual, then its plenty. I get by on 1.66..

Here's my experience with Dell.
In May I bought an inspiron 9400 with the following specs:
intel duo t2400 1.83ghz
1 gig ram
nvidia 7800go
100gb 5,400rpm hdd
17" WS w/ TrueLife
I'm really happy with it, it plays FEAR, BF2, BF2142 Beta and source games extremely well at medium/high settings at 1650x1050 resolution. I called them complaining about overheating issues with my video card, and they replaced it for me. The replacement one was the same way, so they are sending a technician to install a 7900GS (WAY better card, now the regular upgrade) free of charge, and I have no extended warranty. My battery is not one of the defective ones, so I am fine with that.
Overall I am extremely pleased with Dell. My laptop performs incredibly well, and they have treated me very well in terms of customer service. If I ever get another laptop, it will be Dell.

Ive got a Compaq Presario..Its been fine performance wise, as all i use it for is schoolwork, movies, music, and internet. But twice in the two years ive had it its crashed and ive lost everything .But im going ot guess thats more or less XP than the computer itself.
Paid 2400CDN after taxes for it..and it dropped under a grand 3 months later :@

As long as you get the best video card, you should.. Maybe not on ALL HIGH, but on all med/high with no lag, if your using 1680x1050. If your using 1024x768, or even 1280x10**, you will be able to play on ALL high, no lag.. I used to be able to, then I got a new monitor and now I can't play on all high anymore, well I can but I have a little bit of lag here and there... This is all on HL2 and CSS btw... It runs fear on all mediums with no lag. Here is my setup:
E1505
Core duo 1.66
1 gig ram
GeForce 7300Go 256mb
WSXGA+ display- on the stock 15.4" widescreen, I can run it at 1680x1050...
Windows MCE
And some other crap...
I got all that for 880 shipped... Not bad, when tax was 60 or 70 bucks..

Only if you uprageded the RAM and video card. You need at least 1 gig, and at least a dedicated video card.... But I'd go dell.. The screen on that laptop sucks, and dell is so much cheaper. Whats your price range?

It was $1,999 CDN ($1,800 US) Also keep in mind Dell has more coupons and discounts for US customers. My video card was a free upgrade when I bought it.
