Is this sludge you guys are experiencing coming from the break down of the orings? I actually haven't used my eigenbolt yet... It's going into a project gun I have in pieces right now

I was just wondering if maybe a little dirty air might be adding to the sludge problem and we're just noticing it more cuz its on a white bolt.

With the newer shockers the noids will tolerate the co2. The rust issue with compressed air has been pretty much resolved with the introduction of filters and aluminum tanks.

mines been from the eigenbolt surface after being cycled with lubricant.

I read a while back some people were manually breaking in their bolts by rubbing the lube in with their fingers. Has this been effective with anyone, or was it ever done?

The black sludge is oxidation from the sand paper used on the bolts by lurker himself. Waaaay back in this thread, you can find the post from him about it. As for rubbing the lube into the bolt by hand and hand cycling it through the assembly, that worked for me very nicely. I'm getting close to 10 pods out of mine. I get like 9 and 1/4. The problem is the internal bore of the bolt, its a few thousandths of an inch too tight and so 12/70's have a tighter fit than they should. A few of our fellow shocker owners are looking for a metric variant o-ring to remedy this. As for you guys who just got your bolts, I'm not sure if you share this problem with us.

I feel like at this point I'm just needlessly wearing orings down and that's what's causing the black crap. I'm 30-33 tanks of air in. If it ain't broken in by now it never will be... I mean 50k shots should be more than enough.
Edit: thanks Gisgo, believe its the one I bought from you last year

that does seem like a lot of cycles. perhaps they're using a different lube than you?

does lurker lube or monkey poo work better for the eigenbolt than standard sl33k or a thinner variety such as hater sauce? the bolt surface is rough enough such that I don't expect gun oil mixed into the lube to be very necessary, but I'm usually wrong so..?

I've been using straight dow33 for the break-in since I have a 5.3oz tube of it. For game day I used eclipse grease since its slightly slicker.
The surfaces of my bolt that touch anything are real smooth, the porting that doesn't touch anything is a kinda sorta rough.
Mixing oil into grease is usually never required, I just do a touch of it when I'm playing outdoors in cold temps with less than ideal oring fitment.

when I say rough I mean at the microscopic level, such that lube is able to stay on the bolt. the smooth I speak of would be polished, a la pooty bolts that are unable to hold lube.

i just got my eigen today and i'd like to break it in properly.
can anyone suggest the proper procedure? is it basically cycle it until there's no more black stuff and clean it between tanks? do i use the provided o-rings during break-in or wait until after its broken in completely? what lube is suggested for break-in and after? also, i've read to remove the bolt bumper, is this suggested?
its a stock-internal 04 SFT, minus the eigen, of course.

cycle a few tanks of air through it until the sludge stops, lubing in between tanks and remember to pull your detents out, it just saves them and the bolt. for grease, use whatever has been working for you, shocker grease works fine as it always has, lurker lube works well of course, marmalade from hater works too. I dont think the grease you use matters too much, just as long as its a form of dow33. use the o-rings that came with the bolt, the red bolt guide o-rings may or may not swell, in which case you should use some buna 12/70's to replace them with. DO NOT TAKE OFF THE BOLT GUIDE BUMPER. taking it off was a misconception a few users had.

Why thank you. I realize I'm new around here you guys, and I just wanna thank you all for being so welcoming. I came here knowing quite a bit about shockers and ions, and now I know quite a bit more thanks to you guys. Jim, Apollo, rhino, gisgo, ATL who I spoke with on the fone this afternoon about his new bolt. So yea, thanks guys. Ka-titties, do tell us how your break in goes with your bolt.

Replaced my orings again and played last night. Much tighter fitting bolt guide orings. No fsdo until the end of the night. Felt like it needed more lube. Gun shot great though except being more inconsistent in velocity then I'd like. Gonna take a look at my inserts today cuz I feel like they aren't positioned correctly.

Alright everyone. I really got a rest chance to shoot my gun today and I figured I would share the results.
I played all day with my dwell at 14 because I was still 'breaking in the bolt' and didn't want inconsistencies. It shot perfect all day. Not even the slightest hiccup.
Then I did some pretty simple testing at the end of the day. I dropped my dwell to 10 and it shot, but I was getting some inconsistency. So I bumped it to 11 and the shot tightened up and it was smooth.
Here we're my numbers over the chrono. I put a fresh battery in at the beginning of the day.
278, 275, 270, 285, 273, 281, 276, 284, 276, 282
It shot really smooth. Dwell was at 11. And input pressure was at 125-130
Figured I could do a poor mans efficiency test. Took before and after pictures of the tank gauge.

And after
It's not great, but it's getting there. I am very very pleased with it.
