Ion XE allows for the bolt out back whereas the original Ion cannot allow it without modifications.

It seems like ions will be the next Impulse.
Marker that floods the market long after it stops being made
and can be had highly upgrades in sick formats for well below deserved
price. Just as imps redefined mainstream paintball in their day, Ions forced everyone else to create small cheaper markers for then on. Look at PMR, Etha, all cheaper versions of high end markers in the single tube ion like model

^This^
Before the Ion the closest thing to midgrade we had were Proto Matrixes and Evil Omens. Both of which were excessively expensive for the price.
The Ion was the first marker to bridge that gap, and I think it pissed off the guys with the higher ends to see kids kicking ***.

I used a shocker sft for a few years then in 06 I got a nexus ego for a hefty price tag, went to the field and shot an upd ion with a virtue and needless to say after that I was ion hater, couldnt believe that this (at the time with mods) $350 marker was running with my $1800 marker, but the bad name came from kids that thought their **** didn't stink with their upd ion. Now I don't play too much but if I do my main is an ion haha.

The Ion XE is the way to go. The have the bolt out the back feature that the Ion doesn't have. The original Ion was a bit of a pain to work on the bolt. The XE took care of that. Personally I have got to say that while not the prettiest gun there is, The Ion has held up well and there is a sh-t load of upgrades for them that can be had for cheap. It's a worth while gun to get. My next Ion will be using DW's closed bolt and mech mod. Should be cool. I need to get a cocker milled body.

Most of the haters never shot any nicely upped ions. One of the best shooting guns I ever used was an upped lucky ion. Thing was smooth, quiet and great on air! Didn't weigh a whole lot either. I think they even hold a bit of value still.

Still sad from getting rid of my Ion NT...only problem with mine was the L7 / virtue redf combo that got me problems , even with the OLED i had issues that never got solved. But honestly , I shoot an ego 09 now and I STILL miss the ION NT. My ego is capable of 11 pods out of a 4500/68 fill......my Ion NT was capable of getting 13-14 ...yess, 13-14 I´m not jocking.
Epi frame, custom mod trigger (NDZ i think), qev, lasers, kila detents, L7, oled, NT reg (its a hyper 3 from dye with the NT sleeve), trinity asa, alum body (non bob), freak shooting at 684 bore..........look at the avatar
Dammm I miss that thing

What were your issues with the bolt board combo. I'm working on one now with the same setup minus the oled as having some trouble tuning it

there should a thread or two about the problems but many have had a bolt staying forward while shooting (psp ramping ) an L7 with a virtue Redf board (the previous board to the redf didn´t present issues with the L7)
There is a big shhhhh of air and te bolt staying forward while shooting, it will go back but can repeat the problem several times in a 1800 stream shoot

Yeah that's the exact problem I am having right now. Tried playing with the dwell and had no luck fixing it. Mine doesn't do it that often though. Virtue said the L7 is too light and sticking forward and to use the stock bolt again.

This problem happened to me sometimes, probably every 10,000 or so shots if that, doent seem to happen on any settings other than ramping with high ROF.Wish they hadnt Fked with the original board and went to the 'redefined" version, the original had a WAY higher ROF,I could outshoot my Vlocity with a Gangstar chip on ramping!

Bob
I tried the stock bolt and the firebolt at some point but IN MY CASE (upper case just to say it was me and only me) once the issue appeared it never went off no matter what bolt I used. The problem was fixed turning over to the stock board or a blackheart board that I tested also.

You know...the L7 bolt has so little mass it probably cycles a lot faster. I wonder if that is confusing the board somehow? The math may be working out to the point where the gun is trying to fire at the wrong time in the cycle. When in ramp the board will start controlling the gun mathematically, because it has to add or remove shots to keep the ROF consistent.
Now most more modern boards base the timing on seeing a gap between shots, but not all boards do. Even if the RDEF board does, it could be a simple math issue in the programming. If anyone is having this problem I would mess around with the eye or bolt delay settings(whichever the board has) to see what happens. My instinct would be to lower the settings first since everything is occurring faster. If that doesn't work then try raising them to see if you can balance out the programming math. Tis worth a shot......
