Limited appeal yes, but there are reasons.
1. X79 has quad socket memory for moar bandwidths.
2. X79 has more PCIe lanes. I forget how many more than the mainstream platform, but it's substantial.
3. 3820 has moar cache than a 3770k.
4. If you get a 3820 now, you have an upgrade path to a hex or octocore later. Needless to say, 1155 boards will never see anything more than quads.
