eh rutgers gets pretty absurd research money and maryland still has a huge following even though they have been down lately. the rutgers move is more of a pure research opportunity pick up and maryland opens up a huge market and looks to be more of an investment.


i do agree there are MUCH better football schools they could have gotten, not arguing that at all. these schools do bring stuff to the table although its not as obvious as a huge football program.

Pretty sure research grants and academic endowments aren't shared with the rest of the conference. Joe is 100% right. The conferences are about athletic money, which comes mostly from football. That's the money that gets shared, and that's the money that can be increased if the conference receives lucrative TV deals, etc. Media markets play a role, but ask the NHL what happens when all you think about is media markets. The brand and quality of product is important.

Athletics and academics aren't very much tied up. You're working with other people because they're good at what they do, not because they're in your conference.

oh yea definitely but it makes for a stronger relationship between the schools and the BIG schools are all major research centers. Like i said it is a pretty ****ty reason
