Strategy for playing with Newbs and crowded fields

First off this is not a negative post at all. I like seeing new players at the field and I like playing with large groups. I play some woodsball/rec ball behind my moms place in a little woodsball course I set up and a big crowd is a nice change up.

I recently started going back to the local field I used to visit vs just playing outlaw ball and noticed that I didn't do nearly as well as I should have against large groups. Most games I would move up and end up getting an elimination or two and then getting put out early. I was doing OK but not near as good as I expected. At the end of the day when the groups were smaller I was able to do really well.

Big problems I had
1. The hyperball field they have is decent size but when you go 6vs6 or more its really difficult to make any moves. Too many guns aimed down range at all times.
2. Also if you do move up your in a position where it is 1vs5 because every bunker in front of you has one or even two people behind them so if you shoot at one somebody else is shooting at you.
3. When you do finally get up the field often somebody will pop out from a bunker you didnt expect because they were hiding the whole game. Or there were multiple people behind the bunker and you only eliminated one.

I think part of the problem with moving is the bunkers are mostly waist, chest or shoulder high so its hard to move without being exposed from multiple angles.

Most games we had multiple people run out of paint because they were just shooting down range at random. The problem with that is when 10 people are shooting down range at random you get hit at random when your aggressive.

Overall I think I just need to be more patient and make sure the other team is thinned out before I move. If I am patient several will run out of paint if nothing else and then I can move.

I have a blast playing I am mostly just working on ways to improve with larger groups.

Stick to the sides.
Move in the shadows.
Stay low, crawl on the ground if u need to.
Try to use LOS to block potential lanes of fire.
Ask for cover fire or provide your own.
If all else fails, outcamp them!

I walk a field before to see lines of sight to see if there are areas that have only one side to get shot at. I like getting to the 50 then camping out one side.

Good suggestions

There aren't any shadows really but everything else I pretty much do.

Your last one is what I really need to do. At least until the field is thinned some either due to guys running out of paint or getting shot out.

HAHAHA

Funny you said that. Another guy who was playing was having the same problems I was. He actually tried to get farther up the field than me but usually didn't last long trying it.

You're having a textbook case of over reaching. It works good on fields with heavy cover (woodsball, urban, etc), but on smaller, more open fields (hyperball, airball) it can be a huge mistake. On a small course with a lot of people you have to hang back a bit more until the crowd thins out. For example, wait until that back right corner is shot out before pushing the right tape.

If you do over reach, best to stop shooting, hunker down, and disappear for a while. Everyone will still be shooting at you, but that means they're NOT shooting at anyone else. Hopefully your teammates will take the opportunity to make a push and take some of the heat off of you.

this does get annoying. I always try to be early and get a few games in before allot of people show up, but of course it happens. I usually advance very slowly and just let the crowd thin out (on both sides). I don't want to be stuck behind a bunker with 6 people. when someone gets out you can usually see who get 'em and then use that knowledge when you steal the spot.

This. I have to do this all the time playing Dorito side.

When this happens in recball, I find a nice comfy bunker in the back, lay my marker on the ground, and sit down and wait for both sides to dwindle down before having fun.

When I get on a crowded field I just stay behind and while the opposing side is shooting the front players, I pop out and shoot the enemy back players so the opposing from players don't know they don't have backup, works 95 percent of the time!!!

I played on the local recball field last weekend and there were around 100 people there. Two groups with Teams of 20-40 ea. as groups would fall out and merge with each other throughout the day.

I honestly felt like a king because most of them were new to the game and really just a bunch of young kids and teenagers trying to play a live action call of duty. You could catch 3 or 4 stacked up in one bunker at any given time and it was like shooting fish out of a barrel. They ended up doing a 7 v 38 game where I was on the team of 7 (all speedball minded players) vs a bunch of kids. At the end of the game we still had all 7 of our guys and all of theirs were dead.

It was my 2nd weekend back in about 3 years and from what I was told it's just a bit late in the season for the more competitive players.
