I do it while reffing as I feel it allows me to communicate better.
I also use a whistle to stop the game when someone's about to get run down ( like a kid or something), and the whistle get's deafening inside a mask with the grill down.

I wear it up sometimes when I play though, so I can rest my chin on my tank. I feel it's more comfortable for me.

only one post so far about bounces. When a long ball hits a folded up proflex, the impact flicks the fold down and the mask bounces back to it's normal state. Fold it up and flick it with your finger, you'll see what happens. It was the tournament players extra step to ensure against mask hits.

This is exactly why I fold mine. And it does help to breathe easier.

this. I used to do this so i could smoke while reffing. works well for Dip too, so you're not spitting on your mask

If I played with a dip in I would vomit. It is hard enough to breathe in a mask without half my mouth taken up.

I've only seen refs and guys that smoke before a game fold it up. I kind of wished my profits would fold up, it makes it easier to talk when you need to wear a mask but aren't immediately in a game.

I fold mine up in game. You kind of just hope before each match that you get hit in the lens and not the bottoms.

I've been told people do it so they can communicate better, but I'd rather have to yell through a mask than take a ball to the lip or the face. The protection is required for a reason.

I could see, however, why a player may do it off of the field though.

Exactly. I was wearing my pair of Grills at a scenario game last month, and I took a dead on, 20ft away mouth shot right to the rubber that covers the mouth. Even with the rubber stopping most of the impact it still felt like I got punched right in the teeth, I couldn't imagine taking a naked mouth shot.

Doesn't matter if there is a purpose to it or not. Its ****ing stupid.

Its even more ignorant when a ref does it. I understand why ref's do it but at the same time, how the **** can you preach safety to people when you are modifying the way the mask is intended to be used thus exposing your mouth. Also figure in the factor most of the people I see doing it are playing recball, its kind of like, that shot to the mask isn't going to lose the tourney for you bud, its recball, you're here to have fun and a shot to the mouth can wreck your day.

I dont know about any of you but my mouth cost a lot of money between braces, whitening, etc. I'll take a paintball before I lose a tooth.

some masks still allow you to be shot in the inside of the mouth. ie: Older Dye Invisions, I4's, JT Boat bottoms, JT Proteus, possibly Profits(ive never personally witnessed it, but have heard complaints) all you have to do is have an errant ball come in, whilst yelling and having your mouth open, and you're catching a ball in the teeth, or atleast in the lip. Rolling the bottom on a Proflex makes it just about the same length as a Boat bottom.

Defend it all you want bud. I deal with safety equipment on a daily basis for my crew from multiple different vendors here at a multi billion dollar global company.

Until anyone can show a document released by JT stating that the proflex bottom is intended to be rolled up during a game, when in fact it should be protecting your teeth/mouth you can pound sand. Key phrase, during a game. The other masks you listed, that would be a design flaw.

Like I said, I get why its done, you don't have to make me understand that. BUT as a ref, you are in charge, you are to lead by example. Modifying a mask that is intended to protect your teeth/mouth so you can smoke a cigarette or whatever the hell you want to do that is more important than your teeth is plain idiotic. You expect some kid to take you seriously when he lifts his mask up a little bit to vent the lense while you're sitting there with your bottom rolled up with a cigarette hanging out of your mouth? Seriously?

Furthermore, if your mouth was to be exposed during a game, why wouldn't you just wear full seal goggles like in airsoft? Oh wait, because insurance companies dont like that either.
