Please, explain to me how hockey is relevant. Just look at the total lack of any media coverage or media pressure for the NHL lockout to end. Pro-tip: they don't care. They are furiously fapping to the NFL, NBA, and college football and the last thing on their minds and most everyone for that matter is the NHL.
Hockey was finally recovering from the damage the last lockout did, now they are back to square zero. It is turning into nothing more than a small cult sport.

Maybe where you live, but I can guarantee you that around here, the only team that people consistently care about more than the Flyers is the Eagles.

That actually backs up my point. You can't find any part of America that isn't balls deep into the NFL, yet it is so easy its comical to point out the amount of regions that don't give the smallest of craps about hockey.
Hockey was starting to finally gain some traction in areas not traditionally known for tuning in, but this lockout has destroyed that.

That's part of the problem. There aren't the millions to throw around like in the NBA and certainly not like the NFL.

West Texas New Mexico, and Montana, In the Dakota's and Montana college hockey and football are the top two sports. In the southern wasteland its highschool football. Hockey isn't part if the culture of the south. It couldn't be played by kids in the winter because it only drops below freezing for a few days a year and the sun is still strong enough to melt it. So to play it you need more than a pond and a couple Sticks.
Moving to Texas was an eye opener in Terms of what hockey costs to just play. It's only organized teams on indoor ice. $100 got you 2-3 years in Michigan. Intexas was 2-3 days.
Football all you need is a ball your friends and a field.
