Field Pros and Cons

Hello all, I stepped off of the field along time ago...I recently was offered to join a business venture in opening a field. I am curious to know what pros and cons you all might have at the locations near you. (Quality, Cleanliness, size, hiding spots, Rentals, lack of... etc...).
Thank you all in advance!

Masks. I just played at a huge indoor field in Montreal and they by default give you terrible masks that fog in moments. They offer an upgrade for $5 for much better ones, but for some reason don`t push it. I`d have spent the extra $5 in a heartbeat had I known how terrible the basic ones were. They shouldn`t be renting people masks that fog 2 minutes into every game like clockwork. I asked them about it, they said the good ones are too expensive to have many of. Blew my mind.

If you use crappy masks, you`re ruining your customers experience. Stop it

Thank you for your response! The protective wear quality was not something I factored in. I can see both side of this...business side and consumer side. I am guessing their stage 1 is just protection and the next stage is protection & ventilation (anti fogging). For someone who has never played would show a disinterest if they were to go again. Do you remember what brand the basic and upgrade option were?

A big "Pro" to get newer players to enjoy your field, then come back, and pay for rentals and paint over and over again in groups, is to make sure that the "rental" players only play against other "rental" players. Nothing ruins a day faster than an over-aggressive person shooting too much paint at a new player. Treat your newest and least experienced players the best and they'll keep giving you their money.

That is a big one. Making sure people are having fun is huge. Also spending a little extra on goggles is a great idea. They will hopefully fog less and people will wear them more. Nothing is worse then having to have a ref tell people to keep their goggles on and the customer telling the ref they took them off because they couldn't see.

the proto rental mask with a thermal lense works amazingly...you can clean the entire mask by dunking it in soapy water and the lenses stay great for a long time also if the foam rips you can just replace the entire thing so no need to super glue it. the bt-4 rentals are some of the easiest to work on imo and the parts are cheap.
keep your rental and regular groups happy and they will keep coming back also offer something for tournament players to keep them happy and separated

Staff that seems interested in you being there in a pro.

Staff that texts their friends, talks about how many drugs they did last night, or just sitting around is a con.

At my field, our owner makes sure we're all using mech cockers or pumps or what have you to help even stuff out against renters. He likes us there to help them get going in the beginning of the day, then tells us to go play speedball. He gauges how fast we 'have' to leave the rental area based on their reactions and the ref's observations.

Also, thermal lenses don't necessarily have to be standard, but definitely say that there's a difference.

Make sure to have a good staff around you. All it takes is one bad ref, etc to ruin someone's playing experience. Refs should make sure everyone is safe, having fun, and giving new players tips and advice on how to play or improve their game. Be engaging.

Definitely get thermal lenses. Not being able to see ruins the experience quick. And like pointed out, many players take their mask off because they can't see.

Look at other fields in your area. Big or small. Indoor or outdoor. How they are laid out. Give customers a different experience if possible. Have at least 2-3 fields besides a speedball field so you can put new players together without limiting the play time of experienced players.

Look at other rental guns in your area. Spend a little more up front and have more people wanting to rent from you since your guns are better. There are a lot of good rental gun options now.

Get a good 4500 psi compressor. I hated playing at a field that only fills to 3k. You'll lose experienced players from that.

Work a deal with a food truck to be out there if you have enough business. If you serve hot food you'll have to deal with the health dept, and that is one hassle you don't want. Players who eat there get back in the field faster and shoot more paint that way. If they leave to eat they might not come back.

Maintain your equipment and bunkers. I've taken over maintaining and cleaning at the field I help out at with two other adults there. And by adults, I mean over 30 and actually care about making it better for everyone. It's a hassle, but a little extra effort every week will save you a lot in the long run.

Depends almost totally on where you are...

Here in Edmonton it's -30c for 4 months a year, -10c for 3 months and kinda nice the other 5 months. Indoor makes a ton of sense.

In Texas it's +1000c all year, indoor makes a ton of sense, but for a different reason

Maybe where you are it's kinda nice all year. England is a good place for outdoor. So are lots of places between Edmonton and Texas...
