Need help fixing this ION
Hello
A friend of mine has an ION, not sure what year model it is, the gun wont even power on with a battery in it. I used to run perfect about 6 months ago and then suddenly stopped. I know its an old gun and might not be worth messing with, but it has a good amount of upgrades on it and if its something simple I might as well try to fix it.
Any ideas or suggestions how to begin trouble shooting this marker to pin point a problem? Thanks

If it does not turn on with a new battery first thing I would check is the battery wires

The wire look fine and are connected to the board. Even though one of the wire covers is stripped but seems to be 100% in tact. What would be the next step?

check the power button.
dont take this the wrong way but how are you checking it? Multi meter? Visual inspections of electronic components carry little weight if you know what I'm saying.

Good point, I have build firearms from scratch but when it comes down to electrical stuff I have no clue. So I guess I need to get my hands on multi meter and do some testing. I have no idea how to do that either
What I were to replace the whole board, would that take care of any electrical issues and how much do they run these days?
Thanks

call up gog and ask for a refurbished ion board should run you about 15 last I checked (less than a decent multi meter)
Oh and yes that will take care of all the electrical issues (unless it was your battery or eyes)

The battery is good, now Im not clear why broken eyes would effect the gun to turn on, since i though eye can be turned on and off and is there to prevent paint chopping?
Thank

Now this seems really redundant to ask, but is the battery BRAND new and name brand? 75% of the problems with the Ion are battery related. Put a brand new battery that you just took out of the package into it if you haven't already. Try taking the board out of the gun and hooking the battery to it and see if you can see any damage to the board.

it would not but if you were looking to replace 100% of the electronics you would have to replace the eye too.

No there is no redundancy in taking the steps back word to identify the problem. Thats why I am here and I need help. I figured if I could get this gun running for few bucks then that might be worth the time.
I will try a brand new battery when I will have a chance.
Also nerve2030, thanks well I guess if I have to replace just the board at least it will turn on if thats the problem.

Try using a brand new duracell 9v.
If even that does not work then I would check to make sure that there is no corrosion on the wires. as well as making sure where it is stripped is not touching metal.

You state that one of the wires in stripped. Are you referring to the insulation on the wire? The red or black part?
If so, its most likely shorting out. Wrap some electrical tape around the wire and plug the batter it.

Up on closer inspection I realized actually the black wire was damaged. Since it was so close to the connector I decide it to cut it, now I tried to hold the stripped end of wires up to a battery while trying to power it on and it doesn't.

Just to go over basics the black is negative and red wire is positive right?
And all I have to do to power on the board is to press one button on top for about 3 secs right? The lower button is for different modes from what I understand.

Correct, although the board powers on with the push of the button.. No need to hold it.

The button could be bad. Try using a paper clip to short out the two contacts on either side of the top button.
Install brand new Duracell battery.
Take it to some one who knows a little bit about electronics and ask them to use a volt meter to check the power across the capacitor. That will tell you if power is getting to the board. If they have a soldering iron, they can probably replace the battery harness for you too.

There are no buttons on the frames right now , that is how I got the guns
I can have virtue buttons for $9 a piece, that is twice the price of the other ones, but if you say they are worth it, then I will go for Virtues

The epiphany ones can be a little loose in the ion frames. The button may also be too long and may hold down the switch causing issues when trying to power on/off the board.
The virtue ones will be attached to the frame via adhesive and are less likely to detach themselves from the frame through use. Some consumers have stated that the virtue button can make it hard to turn the board on or to feel when the switch is being activated.

To the OP, if this isn't solved still, that broken wire could have shorted the board itself, pretty much frying it. I'd try and grab an old board to replace it with. Should solve any problems.
