I will be validating rosters against the APPA system but I will not be using the system for scheduling or game tracking for several reasons.

1 - We would not be able to have an truly open division where even the local pro ranked players could play unless we started handing out major points for results. This would cause many players to get ranked higher than maybe they should be.

2 - With a season long event (verse an event by event winner) it was difficult to determine how to issue points to each team. In my opinion the system doesn't work as well for season long series' vs event by event series'

So will earned points still go into appa for player ranking?

I'm guessing they won't after re-reading your last post? So does this mean players won't be able to earn points while playing in the fox ball series?

Unless they are doing things different this year. I would assume no points will be awarded for playing foXball. And I think the major reason is because there would be no way to have the Major leagues be an "open" league. If they did award points they would need to award like d1 points or something. And if that was the case what would Minor's be ranked?

Just not the best idea IMO, just noticing that a lot of local 5 man teams are stepping up and playing foxball minors. With an appa ranking system it would be very easy for theses teams to be over ranked and un able to compete in lower divisions.

Correct - players will NOT earn points in the APPA system.

If we ran an OPEN league in the APPA we'd have to be Semi-pro - that's a lot of points earned and then you'd have no other local league to play in. That's not our goal.

Without APPA, I wouldn't mind seeing an official promotion/relegation system similar to what AXBL/MXL did. There are teams in the minors who could definitely compete in the majors, but there's nothing stopping them from staying in minors year after year. (I'd just like to see more teams in the majors )

Dave, is it true that minors teams can have a guest from a majors team this year?

Sumorai, from the Foxball 2013 deposit form visible to all at the fields website:

League Structure

Teams will be divided into two divisions – the Major Leagues and Minor Leagues. The Majors will be an open division with no roster limitations as far as player ranking is concerned. The Minors will be limited to D3 and lower. Minor league teams will be allowed to roster one Major League or Open player. There will be a total of 9 team slots available for the Major leagues and up to 18 team slots available for the Minor leagues. Teams will play a total of 8 “regular season” matches – 2 per event – for a total of 240 minutes of paintball

Roster Structure

Teams will be allowed to roster up to 12 players for each event. There will be no limits to total number of roster spots for the season. However, in order for a player to be eligible for the playoffs, they must sign in to, and play, at least one event prior to playoffs. Players will NOT be allowed to play both Majors and Minors at the same event with the exception of the one Minor league roster spot. League issued jerseys required to participate in matches.

I have to agree with Sumorai, no points means no ranking changes and no way of keeping the level of play fair? Dont get me wrong I do understand the ranking issues you brought up. How do they score the divisionals in PSP or dont they?

Again thought about it after I wrote it probably not an issue in PSP as they dont have an open div.

I'm just going to call you that instead of Abe from now on.

I just wanted to confirm that I can play on a Majors team for one event AND also guest on a Minors team at that same event (can I play on both a Minors AND Majors team all season?). That wording is a tad vague.

Yes, every minor league team will be allowed to roster one open player. A player will be considered open if they are a d2 or higher player (according to appa ranking) or if they are rostered on a major league team this year (2013).

The goal is to allow the minor league teams a chance to bring in a more experienced player to help them grow.

Dave, question about this. I am ranked D3 in APPA, but playing on a Majors team. Does the rule quoted above mean that I cannot play on a Minors team that has a D2 player on it already?

That is correct - you'll be considered an "Open" player as soon as you play one event this season.

The idea is to get players playing where they belong. Lots of players in the Majors are ranked low enough to play Minors, but I don't think you'd want to see a whole team play both Majors and Minors....would you?

No. I was just hoping to guest with some friends in the Minors, but they already have a D2 player on their roster. So even though I'm only ranked D3, I still can't play with them because I'm playing Majors also.

Huge bummer to hear there's no APPA, I'm looking to move my ranking back up. I'm very surprised to hear they don't have a format that would fit situations like this. Have you tried talking to them directly to come up with some sort of custom system for this tournament series?

I think what Dave was saying was.. your rank would go up too high and then you'd be in a pickle where you're ranked higher than your skill level.

There really is no value in having your ranking go up. If you want to play at a higher level you can, but once you have a higher ranking you can't play at a lower ranking.

If you play in the "Open" division you'd quickly be ranked out of all other local events....I don't anyone wants to do that (IMHO).

And yes - I've been working (on and off) with Chris (APPA) about how best to incorporate this into his system. Overall I believe in a universal ranking system - I just don't want to unjustly advance players to quickly.
