It leaks because the gasket is bad, the surfaces aren't clean/smooth/true enough, or the bolts aren't staying tight. Bits of squeezed out RTV is an excellent way to clog an oil pickup. Unless Ford tells you to use it, don't.

I use permatex black(or whichever is the color that doesn't stay all wacky tacky.) Doesn't require much at all, just enough to keep the gasket in place. I've seen people put a nice thick bead on gaskets(a no no), as if the gasket itself won't seal it.

usually a thick bead would be used in lieu of a gasket, not in addition to.

The only time I bead it up all thick is on the ends of my intake manifold in the lifter valley(in which I don't use a gasket.) Its what all the cool kids do on their ford 5.0's(I did it cause I'm cheap.) Anything thicker then like the width of a piece of paper is overkiller.

I bought the permatex # 2 stuff, so Ill try that out and see what happens, im going to use VERY thin layer along with a felpro gasket. As far as the jb weld comment I thought you were just trying to be sarcastic. MY BAD! But JB weld is never used on gaskets just an FYI
