Found out my TA drives a 335i today. Jelly.

He said he was thinking about selling it for an SUV because this is his first winter up north.

I almost told him "downpipes and jb4 will change your mind" but decided against it.

I don't understand why people think "let me get a brand new SUV for winter so it can be pelted with salt and saturated with salt snow melt all winter" If the dude can afford a 335i he can afford to have a cheap jeep wrangler for the occasional bad snow storm.

I would drive a 335i. I would be scared to modify it because of all the fuel pump problems though.

My other suggestion, if not jb4/downpipes, was going to be "trade it for an XI"

Can't you just get an aftermarket fuel pump...?

I'd kill for a 335. One of my favorite cars lately.

420ish hp should be easy to achieve and it's not super stressful on the car. Also, you can just switch to stock mode when you're not planning on going fast. If you think about how much time you're actually going to be making more than stock power it's not a big deal.

Probably for ground clearance purposes. I prefer the snub nose 135i for some reason, 335i looks too massive to me.

That's not the point. The point is the car in stock form has a potential for issues, so if you have an issue with the modded one, how easy is it for them to void your warranty and stick you with a giant bill.

If it was going to be a weekend car, I'd rather have a 135i. But the interior space of the 335 would be nice on a daily.

Edit: ^^ You can pull a jb4 out of an n54/n55 car and the dealership never knows it was there.

says who?

I call BS on anyone making those type of claims until they provide significant proof to the contrary. I think I'll be waiting a while.

Going from a personal experience, I know two people who have had issues and BMW fixed it under warranty (not piggy backed ECU's fault). However, wrenching on a car doesn't really scare me either so I could care less. They left their ecus in.

135i has plenty of room for a daily imo, but not enough for me to have it as my only car without roof racks

Will it void my warranty? Should I remove parts before going in for service?
Most leave parts like ECU tunes and intakes on for basic oil changes and service but we suggest removing any modifications prior to making a warranty claim. This is to ensure they are not causing the problem and to make things easier for your technician who may not be familiar with how to properly remove and reinstall your modified parts. Before going in we also suggest reading/deleting the hidden DME codes using the JB4 built in code reading/deleting, a CAN Tool, or a BT Cable. JB4 users should always set the tune to map 0 / pass through mode before going in to avoid it interfering with external diagnostic equipment
Quote:
For those with leased vehicles or under factory warranty the JB4 offers the ability to be removed without a trace. While flash tuning leaves behind a permanent record of maximum RPM, load/boost target, vehicle speed, etc, that can never be deleted piggyback tuning on the other hand ensures the DME never sees anything other than the original factory tuning values. With its full CANbus integration the JB4 has access to every piece of information the DME does and thus can provide factory smooth mapping with reduced turbo lag and much stronger power outputs. It's truly how the vehicle should have come from the factory. In addition the JB4 is generally half the price of flash tuning.
Setting it back to stock, driving a couple hundred miles, and deleting the codes that tell the dealership that anything changed in the ECU sure sounds like it would do the trick...

Edit: ^^ I've already had two cars that can't comfortably sit 4 people. Do not want to do it again.

If I could do it again I'd get a 3door. Pretty sure they have more space for rear passengers than my vert. I don't need back doors.

But **** verts. Never buying another.
