I don't know if I would use it for home defense. Bullets can travel through walls and a handgun or shotgun would be much better for that situation. But for SHTF type scenario. AR15 or AK47. Either are fine. The AK will take a beating. You can bury that thing in mud and it still shoot fine.

As far as building it, the way I suggested is very easy. The upper is already assembled and the lower would be as well. The rest is just putting the two together which takes 10 seconds. Anyone with a decent IQ could figure that part out.

It depends on how well you know your uncle and how well he likes you. But this is just an assumption, he probably raised his prices.

You don't say? edit: And while I have heard that 5.56/.223 is less likely to(I don't know if it is more likely over handgun rounds or not), it still has and out of the 3 options, a rifle would be my last choice for home defense.

A handgun would be much better because it's a lot more compact than a rifle. Yes, you still have to worry about penetration but still the better option. Not with certain shotgun rounds though, which would be my first choice for HD.

You are missing the point, likely due to a lack of understanding. Handgun rounds will pass through wall after wall, as will most buckshot. 5.56 rounds are significantly safer to the inhabitants of the adjacent rooms should the rounds pass through.

Well then, if you're not concerned about my 3 1/2" 2/3/4 shot(can't remember off the top of my head), would you like to be my test subjective to prove what stopping power they have?

A PSA AR-15 is probably your best bet. That, a couple of GI mags, and a decent sling. Good to go.
