It's well documented that alcoholism can be considered a disease.

That's because you are only thinking of people with low functioning autism, not higher functioning individuals (like those with aspergers, I know it's not technically autism but it's in the same spectrum). Which ironically is exactly what you were complaining about in your original post.

As a recovering alcoholic I can tell you that it's no laughing matter. I've been sober for nearly 24 hours now.

BTW booze is awesome but when your killing kids to get drunk you know you have a problem
When did you first start experiencing symptoms of schizophrenia? I have been obsessive compulsive all my life, but the major symptoms appeared about 13 years ago when I was in middle school. I finally went to see a psychiatrist and a psychologist when I was in high school, and they diagnosed me with OCD and schizotypal personality disorder. So I feel for you with whatever you're going through. I know I don't have it as bad as some people and I hope it never gets to full on schizophrenia for me.

While I agree with this, an alcoholic may have to drink but he doesn't have to get behind a wheel. Which is why people caught doing so are and should be jailed as OP said.

I don't care about semantics. Whether alcoholism fits the strict definition of a disease doesn't change the fact that millions of people suffer from it and literally the only proven treatment for it s through aa and developing spirituality.

I have met hundreds of alcoholics and the only ones who aren't drunk and terrorizing their families right now found a higher power through aa.

The only people who seem to care about whether it's classified as a disease or not are those who aren't alcoholics and have nothing better to do. The ones I've met frankly don't care about whether it's a "disease" all they care about is what they are doing to improve their lives. I think calling it a disease us more to do with getting insurance companies to recognize it ands therefor be willing to treat it. Otherwise either you have it or you don't and this type of debate has never led to anything good.

Oh and just wondering, why do you care? Do you really have a problem with people trying to change and create a better life for themselves?

If that's what he is saying, he is quite wrong and lives in a fantasy world where willpower can trump everything. Probably also thinks people suffering from depression should just get over their problems and be happy.

yea true in that sense. Idk, guess it depends on the case. Like people quitting smoking after 20+ years. My buddies parents quit cold turkey because their kids told them to.

Meanwhile everyones favorite illicit drug marijuana does none of these things yet it remains illegal. Everyone laughs at what a failure prohibition was but of course current drug policy sure is effective
so you're telling me you can't have mental addictions to weed and that it has no affect on your motor skills? are you retarded, or just high?

I love when people say it's impossible to become addicted to weed. I believed it until I hit college and was constantly surrounded by pot heads who could not go a whole day without smoking multiple times.

The difference is, addiction to marijuana involves mild withdrawal symptoms including inability to sleep or eat, and irritability. Whereas alcohol withdrawals can cause death...

Also it would be a far stretch to call alcohols effect on motor skills/the CNS in general similar to marijuanas. No I am not high but as soon as I'm sleepy I will be enjoying a dose of Nyquil.
