Thanks jimmy,
re-edit to fix the exposure.. did some skin retouching and she had a random blue nail that bothered me, so I fixed that too.

I like the edit much better Chris. And I personally agree with you on the matter of it being slightly off centered. While I agree that a more Christmas oriented location would have helped, still came out alright

I didn't think the apocalypse was happening until later in the month.
Colors are dull, and it's so dark. Also don't seem to be sharp, maybe your shutter speed and variable aperture.

What were your settings? A lot of those seem really soft and dark, like EP said.

Cool concept though. Looking at it I'd maybe suggest playing off it with a few other frames as well. Like having the little girl tying them up with the lights, pulling the strand taught around them, etc.
Concept is just wish it was at a better location with a "holiday" vibe.

It was quite dark at the time but I'm sure my settings were off
In a low light situation like these am I more concerned with shutter speed? Also is 5.6 reasonable at low light or no?
Should I be adjusting ISO in shooting like this or just leave it auto?

Never shoot in Auto, ever. 5.6 is going to suck almost all the time in low light. In a low light situation, you should be more concerned about a good exposure. With your lens, I'd try to avoid shooting when it's dark out. A good way to learn how ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed affect each other is to shoot in Aperture Priority (Av). Read up on it, as well and learn to read your meter.

Shutter speed will be dictated by the moving subject in this case. It needs to be fast enough to freeze movement.
Since it's low light, the aperture needs to be opened as much as possible, unless that renders the depth of field too shallow for the subject (Unlikely until we start talking f2.8). I don't know the lens you were using, but if you had an additional stop available (f4), then that would have been appropriate. ISO should be bumped as well, which it appears to have been.
It's never just one variable that determines what you should choose. In this case, it's dark out, but a slow shutter speed isn't appropriate for the moving subject. It may also be that you were simply trying to do too much for the available light.
To get the exposure right, check the histogram. If you don't know what a histogram is, I would read up on them thoroughly.

He was probably using his 70-300, it's a variable aperture.

Yea it was 70-300, so I guess if I was to buy say the 50mm 1.8 it would be more apprpriate for these kinda of shots, however I would have to try and position myself much closer then?
All those were taken in full manual with me just messing around with settings

Yeah, with a prime lens your feet is your "zoom".

For dark shots, a little more suitable. 50mm F/1.8 is not the fastest when auto-focusing so if you're using it for action it might not be the greatest.
