After reading all the threads on the internet about the $50 paint job using Rustoleum I figured I'd give it a shot. My paint is beat and I wanted it a different color always so what the hell right?

They have a color called "Sand" that's very close to GM Sante Fe tan, which happened to be the color I wanted. Should get started laying down the first layer after lunch.[/quote]

Made a mistake on the first coat..THIN THIN THIN! The paint needs to be milky in consistency, any thicker and you get tiny air bubbles.
First Coat:

Second Coat:

Full Second coated:

Gonna get up early tomorrow to wet sand and apply the 3rd and 4th coats.

To anyone else trying, remember THIN THIN THIN!!!!! This morning I had to go sand down the bubbles...every bubble on the whole truck! I almost said F* it today. The 50/50 mix seems ideal, it laid down nice and smooth today:

FYI: The hood has a ton of hail damage so I'm skipping it until I find better hood, and the bottom part of the truck will be Dupont bed liner

Wow, this is coat 4 and it's really starting to take shape:

There are still some thin spots, tomorrow morning I need to finish coat 4 (it rained shortly pretty heavily during coat 4, NO ILL EFFECTS TO THE PAINT, even though it was wet! This rustoleum is amazing) then wet sand again. I'll keep updating.

Coat 6 is on...1/2 way there!!

Going to wet sand tonight and apply coat 7. I'm running into issues getting light streaks in the paint, I don't know if it's from the mineral spirits (the brand I have is white) or reusing the mixing cups. I went last night and got some clear mineral spirits and enough mixing cups to not have to reuse them.

8th coat:

Coat 9 is on, had to push it in the garage since it was raining all day. Gonna do 10 in the morning and she'll be done! Should I put the back window and doors back on tomorrow or wet sand everything while it's still off the truck next weekend?

You can actually spray this paint after it's thinned, I'm going to bring my hood to work and spray it. It was just easier to roll it since I didn't have to mask and didn't have a large compressor at home.

UPS fairy came today, brought me an OER dash from Summit, $179.

It looks very nice, the trim strip fit perfect. I did have to dig out some urethane to get the dash tabs in. It's a little floppy but I did a test fit and it's very acceptable, I'd definitely reccomend it for someone tire of their cracked dash and can't drop $500 for a GM one.

LMC is bring a while box of goodies to work for me tomorrow, should be driving the truck by Sunday.

Well I have all the parts to finish

The fit of all the reproduction is very good. The tail lights aren't as flush to the truck as OE, but it's hardly noticeable to anyone who doesn't know.

I got really lucky with that grille. I found the reproduction grille last year at the junkyard off someone else's work in progress that a tree fell on. Randomly cruising yesterday I looked in the bed of an 86' and found the shattered grille complete with nice emblem. I took the emblem and drilled the holes in the repop grille...perfect fit! I missed not having the bow tie logo.

Here's some pics from today 95% complete:

Neither doors have been hit with the polisher, the rest of the truck is just needing a wash and wax.

Edit:
Here's what the doors will look like:

And for reference, here's the interior I started with lol

question, if you are going to bother with painting it at all, why not at least try to work some of the dents and dings out.

also why do you not have rear wheel caps....

Because the lack of rear wheel caps increases rear wheel horse power.

Dude, go back to car 102.

I did several, specifically the passenger fender. I wish I would have attempted those 2 on the bed now, i still might at some point.

Rears didn't come with any caps.

Nice job brotato. Dont listen to the **** people say on here. Most of these people wouldnt attempt half of the things you've done to your cars on your own. Hell, not too many of them even change their own oil.
