I would suggest he goes and gets a look (and feel) at what other people or shops have. Something like marker selection is personal, so if he doesn't like how it feels in his hand it doesn't matter how many people swear it's the awesomest

You can't go wrong with a 98 Custom I am a bit biased towards the 98c because I've used mine for years with no problem. It was my first gun and it's still my go to gun for everything. I've played the crap outta this gun and as long as it gets its guts cleaned about every tenth play it will last you a lifetime. When I got really into scenario ball I added a collapsable stock to the back, ran a remote line, added a longer barrel and a low pro hopper. There are so many options with a 98c and with a budget of $600 you could easily match everything I've mentioned above and add a response trigger with cyclone feed and flatline barrel. Hope that helped

Have him hold a done up a5, and a space gun. Then tell him to walk around the woods with both of them for 30 min each. After that, tell him that the average scenario is anywhere from 6 hours to 3 days.

In all honesty, the best way to figure out what to get is to use it and shoot it.

Tell him to look about and get a feel for certain guns. Ask him what he likes to do in a game, or what role he likes the most. If he likes to spend lots of paint over a great distance(for paintball) then he can go along the lines of an a-5 with response trigger or e-grip(to get fast bps) with a flatline barrel(for the increased distance). If he likes to sneak around with intense accuracy then he can get a light marker and buy a barrel kit or something to get increased accuracy. If he just wants to be the generic non-role-specific player then he can get whatever he wants.

Just tell him to buy things for whatever gun he chooses to use that will help him get what he wants out of it. Red dot sights are helpful almost all of the time, and scopes(I use one) are best for larger fields and scouting. I use a tasco red dot sight and an NCStar 2-7x mag. scope, and both have helped me out in various situations.

Having owned a BT TM-15, BT4 ERC, and X7 Phenom, I'd recommend either the Phenom or the TM-15 (don't get me wrong, loved the ERC as well!). Given the price range of $600, the Phenom seems to fit the bill. Widely customizable to fit his style, and includes a hopper, all within a $400 price tag. A tank (new) for around $150 still leaves him $50 for a vest, paint, aftermarket barrel, whatever he desires :-). The Phenom shoots nicely, is, relative to cheaper Tippmann blowbacks, very air efficient, and disassembles VERY easily. All-in-all, quite a nice package.

Tell him to try out a variety of different guns, but I agree with this:

I add to this, mags are pretty simple as well. Tac One's might be at the high end of his range, but he could get a used tac one for cheaper, and a 68 classic used is ~120.

However, it all depends on personal preference, and the optimal gun is the one you play the best with.

If your looking for a good all around scenario marker you can't beat the BT TM's (15&7) don't get me wrong I love tippmanns as much as anybody but they do get heavy after lugging it up and down hills for an entire day. Also efficiency is far superior on a TM vs a Tippmann, and if you have a 2 mile hike back to the air station this will make a big difference.

Tried and true... go with the A5 or 98 Custom. If you really want to go all out, I suggest the X7 Phenom or Crossover.
